To mark the 30th anniversary of GoldenEye, its director Martin Campbell has given advice to the new James Bond director, Denis Villeneuve: stick with what works.
The next James Bond film will be the first produced by Amazon’s MGM Studios. The studio took over creative control of the franchise after Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who had been producing the films for many years, stepped down earlier in the year.
The studio is moving forward with a 26th movie, which will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, known for films like Dune and Arrival. Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the film.
Denis Villeneuve and his team received advice from director Michael G. Wilson, who launched both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as James Bond. Wilson told them, simply, “Don’t change things that are already working well.”
In a recent interview with Gold Derby, he explained that a new James Bond film doesn’t need to be a complete restart. He believes a truly excellent Bond movie is all that’s needed, and that classics like GoldenEye or Casino Royale would still be incredibly impactful if released today.
Please don’t mess with the formula. There’s a lot of potential for future Bond films, especially given the current global climate. I just hope they don’t change things that are already working well!
Although Barbara Broccoli isn’t directly in charge of the James Bond films anymore, she recently expressed her approval of Amazon’s decision to hire Denis Villeneuve as the new director.
She praised him as a wonderful filmmaker and expressed her excitement about his involvement, sharing this with Mark Kermode on his podcast, Kermode on Film.
Villeneuve, who was appointed director in June, shared that he’s a lifelong James Bond fan and expressed his excitement about taking on the project.
I have such fond memories of going to the movies with my dad, and a lot of them involve James Bond! It all started with ‘Dr. No’ starring Sean Connery – that’s how I first got hooked on 007, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

He reassured fans that the character is deeply important to him. He plans to respect the character’s history and create opportunities for future stories.
There has been no confirmation of when the next Bond movie will be released.
The hunt for the next James Bond after Daniel Craig is still underway, and there’s a lot of talk about who might be cast as the new female lead as well.
