To solve this mystery, the filmmakers have come up with a solution called “hypno glasses.”

While conversing with ComicBook, Gunn shared that the concept of ordinary glasses concealing Superman’s true identity was a challenge for him to accept. However, this notion was clarified for him by comics author Tom King when he pointed out that Clark Kent’s glasses possess powers – a fact established in comic book lore.

Gunn explained that the hypnotic glasses used to hide Clark Kent’s identity are an established part of the comic book series. Although this detail has been overlooked over time, it originates from the comics. While discussing with Tom King, a well-known comic book author, Gunn expressed his difficulty accepting the glasses because they were something that bothered him as a child due to his limited capacity for disbelief.

Additionally, Gunn pointed out that although Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent differs visually from Superman, the iconic glasses which are said to mesmerize people, thus preserving Superman’s secret identity, remain consistent with the original character.

You realize, don’t you, that despite both playing Superman, Corenswet appears quite distinct as Clark Kent compared to Chris Reeve. However, he mentioned that there’s an explanation for this in the comics; it turns out that being different looks is actually part of the storyline, and it’s considered official or ‘canon’ that they use hypnosis.

In the comic book Superman (Volume 1) #330 from 1978, it’s not that Gunn is incorrect, but rather King. The storyline reveals that Superman employs “Super-Hypnosis” in conjunction with his glasses to make people perceive Clark Kent as a completely different individual than Superman. Although it may seem a bit silly, this idea has been utilized occasionally since then.

Absolutely, the hypnotic glasses aren’t the sole reference from comics that Gunn is incorporating into Superman. A fresh international teaser for the movie also hints at another deep-rooted comic element: Superman’s seldom-used freeze breath power. The trailer depicts Superman employing this ability to rescue a dog amidst his fight against a city-threatening kaiju in Metropolis.
