After the recent update from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, it appears that only two confirmed canonical projects now remain in the revamped DC Universe.
Are the animated Krypto shorts canon to the DC Universe?
This afternoon, on the social networking site Threads, Gunn addressed a query from a fan about whether the animated Krypto the Superdog short movies align with the DC Universe (DCU).
Gunn responded saying, ‘Nope, but I still do like them.’ This indicates that while the newly released comic ‘Krypto Saves the Day!’ might seem connected to the DC Universe due to its character designs reminiscent of the DC boss’s Superman reboot, it actually stands independently from the DCU.
In one of the added extras on the digital version of Superman, you’ll find “Krypto Saves the Day!” – the first in a series of at least four upcoming animated shorts set to roll out within the next year. This clarification by Gunn confirms that so far, only Creature Commandos and Superman are officially part of the DC Universe (DCU), with Peacemaker’s second season being the next addition to this lineup.
Moving forward, enthusiasts can anticipate the arrivals of Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface in upcoming DCU projects slated for release in 2026. In one of these productions, Supergirl, which will star Milly Alcock as the lead after her initial appearance as the Girl of Steel in Superman’s closing scenes, Krypto the Superdog will make an appearance, having been retrieved from Superman’s Fortress of Solitude by his cousin.
In the upcoming year, production is set to start on Gunn’s Superman sequel along with an unannounced mystery TV series. The Batman Part II is anticipated to commence filming in early 2026, but unlike Krypto Saves the Day!, it won’t be part of the DCU. Robert Pattinson will once again play Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Batman Part II, with Matt Reeves returning as director for this sequel, following his work on the initial film within his The Batman Crime Saga epic.
Krypto Saves the Day!, the initial animated Krypto short, can currently be found as part of the digital version of Superman. However, this short will also be featured in the home video releases of the DC Universe movie slated for September 23, 2025.
