James Gunn Reveals the Surprising Role of Batman’s Company in the DCU (& 3 More)

In James Gunn‘s version of Superman, corporations significantly influence the storyline. The primary antagonist, Lex Luthor, heads LuthorCorp, using its vast resources to seek Superman’s demise. On the other hand, Maxwell Lord leads LordTech and finances the Justice Gang – a team comprising Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl. Gunn intentionally incorporated these corporations into the film as he views them as crucial elements in the DC Universe, even extending to one operated by someone who dons a bat costume and combats criminals physically.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I had an engaging chat with Rainn Wilson for Interview Magazine, where James Gunn unveiled the intricate dynamics within the DC Universe. He outlined three significant players: metahumans, world governments, and corporations. The corporate sector, he noted, is a four-way race between LuthorCorp, LordTech, Stagg Industries, and Wayne Enterprises – each striving for a unique form of control. However, Gunn clarified that these corporations aren’t necessarily villainous; instead, they’re simply devoid of moral compasses, existing under the influence of their guiding figures. In essence, their morality hinges on the integrity of their leaders.

What Wayne Enterprises’ Role in the DCU Could Be

In the DC Universe, a corporation’s morality is largely influenced by its CEO. For instance, Gunn proposes categorizing corporations into a spectrum based on this principle. Although LuthorCorp has shown some good deeds, Lex Luthor himself is a villain and likely will continue to be so in future portrayals. In contrast, Wayne Enterprises could sit at the opposite end, with Bruce Wayne using his wealth for projects aimed at bettering the world. Companies like LordTech might occupy a middle ground; Maxwell Lord supports the Justice League financially, but his intentions and ultimate goals are uncertain. Gunn characterizes Maxwell as “not the best person out there.” He may be more ethical than Lex Luthor, but that’s not saying much positively.

In the world of DCU, it seems that whenever I, Bruce Wayne, make an appearance in movies or live-action shows (even having a cameo in the animated Creature Commandos), I find myself locking horns with corporate rivals such as Lex Luthor, Maxwell Lord, and Simon Stagg. After the events of Superman, Luthor’s imprisonment might have created a power vacuum in the corporate world, leading to a fierce competition among us as we strive to outdo each other. It’ll be intriguing to witness how this rivalry unfolds. As for myself, I don’t seem like the type who’d seek domination; instead, perhaps I’ll use my influence to prevent Lord and Stagg from engaging in unethical activities.

It seems that fans might have to wait a while before they get to see the full unfolding of the DCU, as the feature film “The Brave and the Bold” featuring Batman/Bruce Wayne appears to be several years away from release. Director James Gunn has mentioned he doesn’t want this movie to premiere in the same year as Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II,” which is set in a different continuity. In his recent update on DCU projects, Gunn revealed that there are other projects currently in more advanced stages than “The Brave and the Bold.” Casting for this movie won’t begin until the script is finalized and Gunn is satisfied with it.

While it’s not necessarily suggesting a direct crossover, there might be some hints and winks scattered across upcoming DCU projects in the next few years. For instance, Wayne Enterprises and its objectives could potentially feature in one of these projects. There’s also a possibility of an Easter egg being hidden in the Clayface series, considering the character’s strong connection with Batman mythology. Gunn might as well create a foundation related to Superman in his upcoming sequel, which could start production earlier than anticipated. In a connected universe, every movie or show offers a chance to develop broader relationships and connections.
