James Gunn’s Man Of Tomorrow Officially Cast Major Female DC Character In Superman 2

James Gunn’s new DC Universe is casting a popular actor for the role of Superman, as the highly anticipated continuation of the character’s story nears the beginning of filming.

Adria Arjona, known for her role in the series Andor, will be joining the DC Universe (DCU) franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She’s been cast in a currently undisclosed female role as part of James Gunn’s new superhero world.

I was really excited to hear, first reported by Nexus Point News on January 19th, that Maxima is going to be in the Man of Tomorrow movie! It’s cool to see a character who started as a villain get a chance to show some depth and join teams like the Justice League. She’s definitely become a much more complex character, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they portray her.

Many believe actress Xolo Maridueña is auditioning for the role, though The Hollywood Reporter isn’t sure if it’s related to the Almerac royal family. If cast, she’ll star alongside Lars Eidinger, who will play Brainiac. Both characters will appear on the big screen for the first time in James Gunn’s upcoming 2027 film.

On April 8th, Deadline reported that Adria Arjona, Marisa Abela, and Ella Purnell were being considered for the role of Maxima. However, James Gunn quickly responded on Threads, criticizing the report as inaccurate. He stated that while he respects Deadline, their reporting on this was poor, and they hadn’t confirmed the information with him or his team, who would have immediately denied it. Gunn clarified he’s known Adria Arjona for years, having worked with her on Belko Experiment, and while he admires Marisa Abela and Ella Purnell, he’s never met them.

After Deadline reported that actor Arjona was testing for the role, The Hollywood Reporter added that Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten were also auditioning. The character Maxima first appeared in DC comics in September 1989, created by Roger Stern and George Pérez. Following David Corenswet’s introduction as Superman in the first installment of the new DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters,” in 2025, DC Studios plans to begin filming Man of Tomorrow this spring.

Maxima has appeared in live-action on a few different Superman TV shows. She was first introduced in season 8 of Smallville, with Charlotte Sullivan playing the role. She also made a brief appearance in season 1 of Supergirl, portrayed by Eve Torres Gracie.

The upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, will see Superman and Lex Luthor working together, despite their usual rivalry, to fight a common enemy: Brainiac. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult star as Superman and Luthor, respectively, and Rachel Brosnahan will reprise her role as Lois Lane, while Frank Grillo returns as Rick Flag Sr.

Aaron Pierre, known for his role in Lanterns, will be back as John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow, marking the character’s first appearance in the new DCU on HBO this August. Isabela Merced will reprise her role as Hawkgirl, first seen in the 2025 film Superman. Plus, Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi are expected to return as Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific, respectively, continuing from their debut in James Gunn’s first DCU movie.

The first film in the new DC Universe, Man of Tomorrow, will be released in theaters on July 9, 2027. The DCU will kick off this summer with Supergirl on June 26, and Clayface will follow in theaters on October 26.
