In a hypothetical zombie apocalypse, which location would you rather find yourself stranded in: James May’s The Royal Oak pub or Jeremy Clarkson‘s The Farmer’s Dog farmstead?
For James May, it was an obvious choice where he preferred to be, considering all the factors at hand.
In a conversation with The Guardian, the television host was inquired as to where he would prefer to be stranded, at his own pub or Jeremy Clarkson’s. With promptness, he responded, “Mine,” while sharing one aspect that he found unfavorable about Clarkson’s tavern.
He shared with the media outlet: “The location is Wiltshire. We’re quite well-equipped here. Long lines form for Clarkson’s. There seems to be a system in place for these lines, which I disapprove of. We’ve had this disagreement on numerous occasions.
In simpler terms, May clarified that a bar within a pub should ideally be designed as a spacious counter rather than a narrow serving hatch. He also mentioned that experienced bartenders understand the sequence for serving drinks efficiently, so there’s no need for waiting in line at the bar.
At the end of the interview, The Guardian inquired about May’s most formidable adversary. In response, he playfully quipped, “Well, I’d say it’s likely Jeremy Clarkson.

In the most recent season of Clarkson’s Farm, which debuted in 2024, Clarkson unveiled his new venture, The Farmer’s Dog.
Clarkson envisioned a place where farmers could gather, he said. On days when it rains and farming becomes impossible on Tuesdays, these farmers could come, enjoy a drink, and socialize with fellow farmers.
On the contrary, James May has been involved in the pub industry for a bit more time, as he acquired half of a local pub in a village close to his residence way back in 2020.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve never shied away from expressing my views on Clarkson’s pub. I’ve weighed in on the financial challenges that often come with managing such an establishment.
In an interview with The Telegraph, May remarked that it seemed Clarkson had come to understand that operating a pub can be rather costly.
It gives me satisfaction to call myself the owner of a pub, although it might sound somewhat cliche when celebrities from television say something similar.
