James Wan to Produce New ‘Paranormal Activity’

The Paranormal Activity series continues, just like the ghosts it features, and this time, Blumhouse Productions is bringing in James Wan – the director behind The Conjuring and Insidious – as a producer. Jason Blum and Oren Peli, who directed the first film, will also produce. Currently, no writers, directors, or actors have been announced, which is typical for this franchise, often using lesser-known talent. The last movie, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, came out in 2021 and premiered on Paramount+.

News of the sequel was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, with Wan telling the outlet:

I’ve always loved the original Paranormal Activity – it was a masterclass in building suspense and making what you don’t see truly frightening. I’m excited to continue that tradition and help develop the next chapter in this found-footage horror series.

The first film was made on a tiny budget of just $15,000, but it became a huge success, earning almost $200 million around the world. It became one of the most profitable films of all time, surpassing The Blair Witch Project. The series follows people who encounter strange, supernatural events and record them as if on a home video. Initially, these events seemed like unexplained phenomena, but they quickly escalated to involve demons, witches, cults, and even other dimensions.

James Blum added of the upcoming installment:

We’re thrilled to be working with James on the revival of the series that launched Blumhouse. This collaboration with Atomic Monster is exactly what we hoped for, and I’ll be closely involved in bringing this new story to life. We have a slightly bigger budget than the original film’s $15,000, but we’re keeping the same warning: don’t watch it by yourself!

Why James Wan Makes Sense for ‘Paranormal Activity’

Paramount Pictures

The Paranormal Activity franchise has earned over $890 million globally from its six movies in theaters. However, the series hasn’t been a critical favorite. The first film received positive reviews, with an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but later installments saw scores steadily decline, eventually reaching a low of 15% for Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension.

The Paranormal Activity franchise could benefit from a reboot, and James Wan is a perfect choice to lead it. He’s had huge success with scary movies like Insidious and The Conjuring, as well as other popular films including Saw, Malignant, Furious 7, and Aquaman. Wan is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working today. Beyond directing, he’s also a successful producer, having worked on films like Lights Out, Mortal Kombat, M3GAN, and The Monkey.

Despite a four-year break from movie theaters, the horror franchise Paranormal Activity has transitioned to the stage. A live production of Paranormal Activity is currently playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
