Jason Statham continues to be a highly popular actor. His 2011 action movie recently gained renewed attention, and now the 2016 follow-up is also attracting viewers on streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.
The action movie Mechanic: Resurrection is currently the fourth most popular film on Prime Video in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. It’s also gaining traction globally on Netflix, appearing in the Top 10 movie charts in countries like Brazil (No. 10), the Dominican Republic (No. 3), Jamaica (No. 3), Peru (No. 4), and Venezuela (No. 6).
Jason Statham’s Mechanic Duology Is a Remake of a ’70s Classic
In The Mechanic: Resurrection, Jason Statham returns as Arthur Bishop, a skilled hitman who makes killings look like accidents or the work of others. Thinking he’d left his dangerous life behind, Bishop is pulled back in when his powerful enemy kidnaps the woman he loves, forcing him to carry out three seemingly impossible assassinations around the world.
Directed by Dennis Gansel, Resurrection is a follow-up to The Mechanic, which was originally a remake of a 1972 Charles Bronson film with the same title. Released in 2016, Resurrection performed well at the box office, grossing over $125 million globally. This surpassed the $76 million earned by the 2011 Mechanic film in theaters.
Despite recently gaining popularity on streaming services, Resurrection wasn’t well-received when it first came out. Critics and audiences didn’t seem to enjoy it, and it currently has a 30% rating from critics and a 40% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jason Statham Remains Booked and Busy in the Action Genre
Jason Statham is still a leading action star in the 21st century. Beyond the Mechanic films, he’s been a key part of popular action series like The Transporter trilogy, all four Expendables movies, and the Fast & Furious franchise.
With a female-led spin-off in the works and the Fast & Furious saga ending with the next Fast Forever film, Jason Statham is facing the potential loss of two major franchise roles. However, it appears the actor has already secured a new opportunity.
Released in 2024, The Beekeeper proved to be a big success for Amazon MGM Studios, earning over $150 million globally on a $40 million production budget. Unlike Mechanic: Resurrection, critics generally liked the film, giving it a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In The Beekeeper, Jason Statham stars as a former spy who comes out of retirement to get revenge when his sweet landlady is tricked by a phishing scam, costing a charity she manages millions of dollars. A follow-up movie has already been filmed and is expected to be released in 2027 by Amazon.
Before returning for The Beekeeper 2, Jason Statham will star in the action thriller Mutiny, which comes to theaters in August. The film features Statham as a former New York police officer wrongly accused of killing a wealthy friend. The Beekeeper was released last month.
You can now watch Mechanic: Resurrection on Prime Video in the US and on Netflix in certain countries.
