Recent comments from actor Jensen Ackles have sparked speculation that James Gunn’s choice of director for the upcoming Brave and the Bold movie might not be ideal. The Brave and the Bold has been a challenging project for DC Studios, as they’ve been searching for a fresh and distinctive approach to the Batman story. A Batman film within the DC Universe is definitely happening, but finding the right creative direction has taken time.

I recently read an interview with Jensen Ackles from June 2025, where he discussed the possibility of playing Batman in the DCU. He admitted it would be a huge challenge, and if he did get the part, he’d really need to work closely with James Gunn and the director to make it happen. He’d be relying on their vision a lot, it sounds like!
It’s incredibly challenging to create a Batman performance that feels truly original, given everything that’s come before. I’d really rely on the director, James Gunn, and the writers for guidance and inspiration from the source material. It’s a role where the pressure to not mess up would be immense – I’d be very nervous taking it on. But it would also be a huge honor and a real achievement. Anyone who gets to play Batman has something special.
Jared Padalecki previously provided the voice for the animated version of this famous character in The Long Halloween and Justice League: Warworld. Currently, a new animated project, The Brave and the Bold, is in development, with Andy Muschietti, who previously worked on The Flash, directing and Christina Hodson writing the screenplay.
DC Studios May Need To Bring Out the Big Guns for Batman

Let me tell you, DC Studios has a lot riding on the upcoming Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold. It’s not just about giving us a new take on the Dark Knight – they need this film to really work. They’re hoping to make Batman a central, lasting figure in their new universe, someone we’ll be seeing for years to come, and that’s a huge ask!
This has caused some DC fans to question whether Andy Muschietti is the right director for the Batman movie. After Jensen Ackles publicly mentioned James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, many have started to speculate that Gunn might direct the film himself, given his history with Superman.
The head of DC Studios has frequently expressed his strong affection for Batman. In January 2025, he told Rotten Tomatoes (as reported by DCU Brief on X), “He’s one of my favorite characters. I love him. And we’re going to do great things with him.”
I really love this character – he’s one of my favorites! We have a lot of exciting plans for him, and he’s incredibly popular – the most well-known superhero globally.
James Gunn is essentially in charge of the entire DC Universe, so his creative vision will define where the franchise goes. His decision to direct part of the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, highlights how important this project is to him. According to reports from World of Reel, Gunn is also planning to take on the Batman project after he finishes with Superman.
When Andy Muschietti was announced as the director for the DC Universe’s Batman film, some fans expressed concern. Those worries increased after his movie The Flash wasn’t successful in theaters, leading many to question whether he could deliver a strong Batman movie.
Considering James Gunn’s enthusiasm for the character and universe, and with the upcoming challenges of The Brave and the Bold, it might be most effective if he personally oversees this project from start to finish.
