Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in The Bear, is receiving a lot of attention as a potential Oscar nominee for his performance in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, which comes out this Friday, October 24th. Though he’s currently famous for playing a stressed-out chef in a tough kitchen, this isn’t the first time he’s played a real-life person.
Jeremy Allen White finished working on the show Shameless in 2021 and began his role in The Bear the following year. He recently appeared in the film The Iron Claw as wrestler Kerry Von Erich, alongside Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson. Although The Iron Claw wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, White is now receiving critical acclaim for his portrayal of Bruce Springsteen, which could earn him an Oscar nomination.
In a recent conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, actor White described the challenge of portraying real people – like Von Rich and Bruce Springsteen, particularly when dealing with difficult moments in their lives – as a delicate balancing act. He explained that he strives to be respectful of their actual experiences, but also wants to bring his own interpretation to the roles.
Check out White’s full comments below:
You’ve recently taken on roles portraying real people facing difficult times – Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw and now Bruce Springsteen during a particularly challenging period in his life with Deliver Me From Nowhere. What kind of responsibility do you feel when you’re tasked with portraying someone’s personal struggles and vulnerabilities?
Playing a real person is always challenging. There’s a lot of weight knowing people will be judging your portrayal, and it’s not just the general public – you’re also considering the impact on their family and devoted fans. You want to offer your own interpretation of who they were, potentially sharing insights others might not have, but you also don’t want to disrupt the special connection they have with their audience. It’s a delicate balance – you’re trying to bring a fresh perspective while still honoring the person and avoiding anything that feels disrespectful or inaccurate.
Essentially, White understands the challenges of portraying a real person – it requires recreating a life filled with experiences that aren’t his own. A good biopic strikes a balance: it’s entertaining, respects the subject’s life and work, and allows room for creative storytelling while still honoring their truth.
Interestingly, Bryan Cranston is taking on another role inspired by a real-life individual. He’s been cast as journalist Jeff Horowitz in The Social Reckoning, a new film that’s a follow-up to The Social Network. Jeremy Strong, who previously worked with Cranston in Deliver Me From Nowhere, will play Mark Zuckerberg – a role Jesse Eisenberg originally portrayed.
Next year, Ayo Edebiri will be joining the world of big-budget films with a role in Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu as Rotta the Hutt. She’s also working on The Painted Bride with Mandy Patinkin and Isabella Rossellini, and Enemies, alongside Austin Butler and Anna Sawai. Recently, Edebiri shared news about the fifth season of the acclaimed series The Bear, which is anticipated to return soon.
Jason White seems poised for a successful and lasting career as a leading actor. Biographical films are consistently recognized at the Oscars, and he’s already demonstrated his skill for this type of role, as seen in his work on Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. With the lines between television and film blurring, talented actors who’ve gained recognition on TV are now readily embraced by the film industry.
