Joel Kinnaman’s latest role in a Netflix crime thriller feels like a natural progression from his work in a previous cyberpunk series, showcasing a clear evolution of his acting.
Joel Kinnaman has enjoyed a successful acting career for more than thirty years, appearing in many films and television shows. Though heās widely recognized for his roles in Suicide Squad and RoboCop, Kinnaman has recently become popular for his work on shows like For All Mankind. He also starred in a compelling cyberpunk series on Netflix a few years back.
He’s back on television with a new Netflix crime thriller, which is a great next step after his previous role in a cyberpunk series.
Joel Kinnamanās Villain Role In Detective Hole Is The Perfect Evolution To Altered Carbonās Takeshi Kovacs
Netflix’s Altered Carbon and Detective Hole, based on Jo NesbĆø’s novels, are very different shows. The main connection between them, aside from being adapted from books, is actor Joel Kinnaman, who appears in both. Despite their different genres, the two series feel surprisingly connected thanks to Kinnaman’s compelling performances in each.
Watching Altered Carbon makes it clear that the detective he plays in the Netflix series feels like a more developed version of Takeshi Kovacs.
In Altered Carbon, Kovacs is a troubled hero who strongly dislikes the inequalities of his futuristic society. Driven by a desire for fairness, heās willing to use violence when he feels itās necessary. Although his actions are often harsh and questionable, they come from a strong sense of justice rooted in his personal history.
Both Altered Carbon and Jo NesbĆø’s Detective Hole are captivating crime stories, though they approach the genre differently. Altered Carbon mixes futuristic science fiction with classic noir, while Detective Hole is a straightforward, compelling thriller. Notably, both series feature Joel Kinnaman playing a complicated detective.
Tom Waaler, the protagonist of Detective Hole, is very different from Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon. While Kovacs has a degree of morality, Waaler will stop at nothing to stay in power and hide his wrongdoings. Although he occasionally shows glimmers of good qualities, these are quickly eclipsed by his selfish and criminal behavior.
Despite showing some promise as a good person, Tom Waaler never truly redeems himself. He ends up embodying all the flawed characteristics of Takeshi Kovacs’ complex, often unlikeable, hero.
Joel Kinnaman Steals The Show In Both Netflix Shows
Netflix’s Altered Carbon remains a standout cyberpunk series. While it has two seasons, the first is widely considered much stronger than the second. A key factor in the first season’s success is the performance of Joel Kinnaman in the lead role.
As a huge fan of Altered Carbon, I was really impressed with Joel Kinnamanās performance in the first season. Heās fantastic at portraying Kovacsā inner turmoil with very little dialogue ā his sheer presence on screen is enough to show how frustrated he is with the world around him. It’s a really subtle, powerful performance.
Joel Kinnaman isn’t the detective in Netflix’s Detective Hole; he actually plays the main villain. However, he’s so captivating whenever he appears that he dominates every scene. His performance is so strong, you find yourself eagerly anticipating his moments on screen.
Even though Altered Carbon and Detective Hole on Netflix are quite different, anyone who enjoys one of these shows should also check out the other to see how talented Joel Kinnaman is as an actor.
