John Krasinski reveals how a James Bond veteran helped take Jack Ryan to the next level

Jack Ryan is a well-known character in movies, portrayed by several famous actors over the years, including Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. He’s often depicted as a CIA analyst.

Most recently, Tom Clancy’s books were adapted for television. John Krasinski played the lead role in a Prime Video series, simply titled after the character, which aired from 2018 to 2023 and generally received good reviews.

The popular series is now getting a full-length movie continuation, available on streaming instead of in theaters. John Krasinski returns as the main actor and also helped write the screenplay.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War largely continues the story established in the series, bringing back familiar actors like Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly. However, John Krasinski recently told TopMob that the film has one significant difference from the TV show.

He felt the new installment really increased the suspense and excitement. He believed it offered far more opportunities for action than the previous series, even surpassing many entire seasons in terms of thrilling moments.

To improve the film, we needed to bring in new talent. Fortunately, we were able to work with someone very experienced in making exciting action movies.

As Krasinski put it, we needed top-tier talent, and our stunt coordinator, Lee Morrison, was truly exceptional – the best we’ve ever worked with.

He jokingly said they ‘stole’ the actor from a smaller James Bond project, but now feel like he’s part of the team for good.

Paul Morrison worked on all five James Bond films starring Daniel Craig, starting in a supporting role and eventually becoming the stunt coordinator for ‘No Time To Die’. He’s also contributed to recent blockbusters like ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’, giving him an impressive resume.

The film’s director, Andrew Bernstein, previously directed three episodes of the show’s second season, and he was excited to create a bigger and more ambitious project with the film.

We definitely paid respect to the original TV series, but we also wanted to create something unique with this movie. Our biggest hurdle was figuring out how to make it enjoyable for both fans of the show and people who were completely new to the story.

This influenced both how we developed the characters and the film’s visual style. We aimed for a different look than the TV show, drawing inspiration from classic spy films of the 1970s and movies like ‘Patriot Games’ and the earlier Jack Ryan adaptations.

We drew inspiration from those ideas, and it was enjoyable to put our own spin on the way we approached the project and express ourselves.

He explained that filming action-packed scenes like the car chase through central London and the boat chase in Dubai was very difficult, but he enjoyed figuring out how to make it all work.

Sienna Miller, a well-known actress, has joined the film’s cast as a new character, Emma Marlow. She shared that the physical demands of the action sequences were more challenging than she expected.

She admitted she hadn’t realized how physically demanding the job would be. She explained that during the action sequences, she was doing around 95 squats every hour!

I planned to quickly move behind the sofa, jump out, and pretend to shoot someone – basically doing repeated squats all night. It was exhausting and took some getting used to.

She added: “But I got fit, which is not going to happen unless I’m forced to… so everybody won!”

I’m so excited! The newest Jack Ryan adventure, ‘Ghost War,’ is finally here on Prime Video. And if you haven’t seen the earlier seasons, you’re in luck – all four seasons are available to stream too! You can even try Prime Video for free for 30 days to check it all out.
