John Nolan, a well-known actor and a relative of filmmakers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, has passed away at 87 years old.
He started his television career in the 1960s with smaller roles in shows like ITV Playhouse and The Prisoner. He later gained more prominent parts, playing Daniel Deronda in a 1970 adaptation and Geoff Hardcastle in the popular science fiction series, Doomwatch.
Beyond his filmmaking, Nolan had a background in theatre. He was once part of the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed in plays like Measure for Measure, Julius Caesar, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Later in his career, Nolan frequently worked with his nephews, who both went on to become very successful in film and television.
John was in Christopher Nolan’s first feature film, Following, a dark and complex crime thriller where he played a police officer.
I loved seeing Christopher and John work together again and again! Christopher kept casting John – first as the slick businessman Douglas Fredericks in all those amazing Dark Knight movies, and then in a really powerful, gut-wrenching role as a blind man in Dunkirk. It was fantastic to see their partnership evolve.
John’s nephew, Jonathan Nolan, was eager to collaborate with him, and he chose John as the inspiration for John Greer, a key character in the popular sci-fi series Person of Interest. Jonathan also created and oversaw the production of the show.
Greer, originally intended for just one appearance, became a recurring character throughout seasons 2 through 5 of the popular show, which also featured Jim Caviezel and Taraji P. Henson.
Besides his acting career on stage and in movies, Nolan also taught at Stratford College. He most recently appeared on screen in 2024, playing the role of Speaker for the Hall in Dune: Prophecy.
Kim Hartman, Nolan’s wife, told the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald that he was a truly independent and original person who always lived life on his own terms and knew exactly what he wanted.
I’ll always remember him as someone incredibly smart and quick-witted, with a playful rebellious streak. He could debate anything, always understanding all angles. But beyond all that, he was genuinely the kindest person I ever met – and animals just seemed to adore him! It’s such a loss.
John was a well-liked and skilled teacher who could easily explain complex topics, from Shakespeare to golf. Above all, he deeply loved his family.
In addition to his wife and nephews, Nolan is also survived by two grandchildren.
