Fans of the anime JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure eagerly awaited the release of Steel Ball Run earlier this year, which began streaming on Netflix with its first episode. The series follows Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli as they compete in a cross-country horse race. While many were pleased that new episodes were released weekly, unlike the large batch release of Stone Ocean, it appears that pattern may not continue. A creator involved in adapting Steel Ball Run recently discussed the show’s future, suggesting a possible change in release schedule.
As of today, a release date for the second episode of Steel Ball Run, or any future episodes, hasn’t been announced. In a recent interview with AniTrendz, the director of the latest JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime, Yasuhiro Kimura, addressed the wait for episode two, but didn’t offer a specific date. He explained that each episode takes a significant amount of time to produce, but that production is going well and he’s just as eager to see the finished product as the fans are.
The Steel Ball Run’s Debut
During the interview, Kimura explained how making the first episode of the series took much longer than usual for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. He said the first part, or “1st STAGE,” was very tightly paced, and they felt it wouldn’t be right to end it on a cliffhanger. The team actually decided they didn’t like cliffhangers in general, believing they can be stressful for viewers. They considered that while some people binge-watch shows, others prefer to watch episodes at a relaxed pace, and constant cliffhangers could be frustrating. Although the first half of the episode does end with a setup for the second half, they decided early on not to make cliffhangers a regular thing at the end of each episode.
Good news for fans of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure! An event at this year’s Anime Expo will bring together the anime’s creators and voice actors, and there’s hope we’ll get an update on the future of the series, specifically regarding Johnny Joestar. While it’s not certain, fans are eager to hear about a release date for the next season and are hoping it avoids the issues that plagued the previous arc with Jolyne Cujoh. It doesn’t look like the weekly episode releases of “JoJo Fridays” will be returning, but many are optimistic that the Steel Ball Run storyline will continue soon.
