The popular manga “Jujutsu Kaisen” concluded its story in September 2024, with Volumes 29 and 20 being released simultaneously on December 25th, 2024, exclusively in Japan. Since its conclusion, “Jujutsu Kaisen,” also known as JJK, has been acknowledged as one of the most innovative series in the current anime and manga scene. Remarkably, even though this is Gege Akutami’s first serialized manga, it gained an unparalleled level of popularity that continues to expand post-conclusion. Simultaneously, while its third season has yet to air, the anime adaptation confirmed Season 3 in December 2023, following the conclusion of Season 2.
As I eagerly anticipate the new season unfolding, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia. Yuji Itadori, along with our valiant sorcerers, are about to embark on an adventure post-Shibuya Incident, aiming to rescue Satoru Gojo from the Prison Realm. The gripping finale of JJK in Weekly Shonen Jump left us with a sweet-yet-bitter goodbye after six thrilling years. However, our beloved creator, Gege Akutami, subtly hinted at a potential return, possibly with a fresh manga! Although we may have to wait a bit longer, his optimistic message in the final volume has kept hope alive in the hearts of fans like me.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Weekly Run Had a Major Impact on Gege Akutami’s Health
I had the opportunity to work alongside Gege Akutami on the One Piece Card Game, showcasing the captivating visuals of the Five Elders. This was the first time these characters were officially colored, well before their debut in the manga or anime. Alongside these stunning images, Akutami also expressed a heartfelt message about wanting to repay Eiichiro Oda for his kindness. As translated by @lightningclare, the translator of JJK Chapter 236, Akutami mentioned, “During the serialization of Jujutsu Kaisen, I fell ill and saw no way out until Oda-sensei introduced me to a hospital.
Once fully recovered from his illness and with the completion of serialization, he felt grateful towards him but wasn’t sure how to express it; after much deliberation and several detours, he chose to repay him through his work, as he put it. Furthermore, Gege mentioned that creating Saint Nusjuro was the most enjoyable part for him, and he was astounded by the color details of the Five Elders.
Despite being in the middle of serializing Jujutsu Kaisen, Akutami frequently became unwell due to excessive workload and publisher demands. Many mangakas, particularly those on a weekly schedule, experience various health issues because of the physically demanding nature of their work. Producing a manga weekly took a heavy toll on his health, yet fortunately, he is making a good recovery. As of now, Akutami hasn’t disclosed whether he will produce a Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off or an entirely new series. However, it appears we may need to wait some time before hearing more about his future creative plans.
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment from our beloved author, but I also understand the importance of taking a break before diving into a new series. While he’s recharging and gathering inspiration, he’s been keeping busy with exciting side projects like designing visuals for the One Piece Card Game and celebrating Black Clover’s 10th anniversary. It’s only been a year since Jujutsu Kaisen wrapped up, and considering the immense effort that goes into such masterpieces, it seems sensible to assume he might not be ready to jump back into such an intense schedule just yet, especially before enjoying some well-deserved rest first.
