Director Julia Ducournau, known for the provocative film Titane, is back with a new genre film called Alpha, which just released its first trailer. Like Titane and her earlier film Raw, Alpha promises to be a unique and challenging experience that subverts expectations. Following the critical acclaim and Palme d’Or win for Titane in 2021, Alpha is expected to generate strong reactions from critics and audiences alike. The film is scheduled for release on March 27, 2026.
As is typical with films from NEON, very little information about this movie has been made public, though the studio has offered a brief description of Alpha.
Thirteen-year-old Alpha is struggling, and life with her mother isn’t easy. Everything changes when Alpha comes home from school with a new tattoo.
The film Alpha features Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield, and Louai El Amrousy in its cast.

French filmmaker Julia Ducournau burst onto the scene in 2016 with her first feature film, Raw. The movie follows Garance Marillier as a committed vegetarian who starts veterinary school and unexpectedly tastes meat during an initiation rite. This single taste unleashes a disturbing and intense craving for human flesh. Raw is a visually striking and unique take on the cannibal genre, earning widespread critical acclaim and a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and appearing on many year-end ‘best horror’ lists.
Though her first film, Raw, was noteworthy, director Julia Ducournau truly showcased her talent with Titane. This second feature is a daring, strange, disturbing, and thought-provoking movie that stands out as one of the most ambitious films of the 2020s. The story centers on Alex (Agathe Rousselle), who develops an unusual fascination with cars after a childhood accident, even forming a strange intimacy with them. Alex also struggles with violent impulses, and her life spirals further out of control when she becomes pregnant after fleeing a series of murders – and discovers the father is a car.
Despite winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the disturbing and graphic body horror film Titane didn’t achieve widespread popularity. Notably, it wasn’t even nominated for Best International Film at the Academy Awards, unlike many other Palme d’Or winners.
Initial responses to the film Alpha aren’t as enthusiastic as those for the director’s previous work, currently holding a 57% positive rating based on 60 reviews. Critics generally praise the strong acting and the director’s distinctive visual flair, but feel the story itself isn’t as well-developed as other aspects of the film.
