Karl Urban will soon star as Johnny Cage in the new Mortal Kombat movie, a character beloved by video game fans. He’s already looking ahead to his next role, and it will be another famous character from the gaming world.
Karl Urban recently mentioned in an interview with Square Mile that he’d be interested in appearing in a movie based on a video game. While he doesn’t play many games himself, he’s a big fan of Red Dead Redemption and specifically said he’d love to play the main character if a film adaptation were ever made.
Karl Urban Wants to Play the Live-Action John Marston
He said that Red Dead Redemption is a favorite game of his. He really enjoys Red Dead, explaining that he didn’t grow up heavily involved in gaming. While he loves the chance to escape into games now, he couldn’t afford consoles when they first came out in 1994 – he was an unemployed actor living in Sydney at the time.
He explained that by the time he had the chance to play, he was too caught up with work commitments all over the globe. Whenever he did get a rare moment, Red Dead Redemption was definitely a game he enjoyed. He specifically mentioned how much he’d like to play as the character John Marston.
Released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston, an ex-outlaw who wants to settle down and live a peaceful life with his family. However, his past comes back to haunt him when government agents kidnap his wife and son. To rescue them, he’s forced to hunt down the members of his old gang. Widely considered a masterpiece, the game was followed by a prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released to similar acclaim in 2018.
Karl Urban Can Be Seen in The Boys and Mortal Kombat II
Even though a Red Dead Redemption movie isn’t confirmed yet, fans will still be able to see Karl Urban in action soon. He’s returning for the fifth and final season of The Boys. The new season premiered on April 8th, bringing to a close a popular series that began in 2018 and first streamed in 2019 based on the comic books.
Karl Urban will be in theaters next month starring in Mortal Kombat II, which premieres on May 8th. This sequel will finally show his character, who was only mentioned in the first movie released in 2021. If the film does well, a third Mortal Kombat movie could be made, potentially bringing Urban back to reprise his role.
