The new disaster movie Thrash continues to show that what critics say doesn’t always impact how popular a film is on streaming services.
Netflix is known for its shark movies, and its French horror film Under Paris was a huge hit. While fans wait for the sequel, Thrash is now available and quickly becoming popular. In fact, it’s already the most-watched movie worldwide, according to FlixPatrol.
The movie Thrash launched on April 10th and quickly became a worldwide success. It reached number one in 90 countries, including the United States, even though reviews were somewhat mixed.
Critics Trashed Thrash
The survival thriller Thrash wasn’t well-received by critics, earning a 38% approval rating based on 26 reviews. Interestingly, viewers didn’t seem much more impressed, giving the film a similar audience score despite its initial popularity.
Digital Mafia Talkies’ Pramit Chatterjee summed it up, “that’s suffering from an identity crisis.”
Peter Travers of The Travers Take reviewed the film as a quickly-made, somewhat capable imitation of Jaws, suggesting it’s an okay substitute until a better option arrives. He expressed sympathy for lead actress Phoebe Dynevor, feeling she deserved a stronger project.
Reviewers generally reacted positively to Thrash. Shannon Connellan of Mashable called it a “solid survival thriller” with a strong cast and compelling visuals, praising the director’s skillful blend of horror, action, and comedy. Jamie Bradnax from Black Girl Nerds agreed, describing the film as “engaging, suspenseful, and knowing exactly what kind of ride it wants to be.”
Viewers generally didn’t enjoy the movie, with one critic calling it a mess, citing poor acting, a predictable plot, and overall nonsensical storytelling, adding that it felt like a copy of another film. However, another viewer had a surprisingly positive reaction, admitting it was “bad, very bad, but good bad” – meaning they found it enjoyably terrible.
What Happens in Thrash?
The new disaster film Thrash comes from director Tommy Wirkola, known for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Silent Night. Adam McKay, the director of Don’t Look Up and The Big Short, produced the movie. Thrash follows a South Carolina coastal town where a hurricane is just the first problem—soon, bull sharks are flooding the streets, and residents are caught in a terrifying fight for survival.
The film stars Phoebe Dynevor (known for Bridgerton), Whitney Peak (Gossip Girl), Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator), and Matt Nable (Riddick, Arrow), along with Andrew Lees, Alyla Browne, Stacy Clausen, Dante Ubaldi, Sami Afuni, and Chai Hansen.
Thrash is streaming on Netflix.
