Starting this September, Marvel will bring back an earlier film to theaters before the release of Avengers: Doomsday. Because Kathryn Newton is now playing Cassie Lang, Scott Lang’s daughter, a small change will be made to the movie. Newton first appeared as Cassie in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), though she wasn’t the original actress in the role. Showing the film again before Doomsday will help clarify the timeline of her taking over the part.
The directors of Endgame, the Russo brothers, are set to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, having been confirmed for the projects in 2024. In late 2025, they revealed that a re-release of an earlier film will include new footage and edits designed to connect the storylines to these upcoming movies. This could involve changes for the character Cassie Lang, as actress Kathryn Newton will reprise her role as the size-changing hero, Stature, and this re-release will be the first to utilize Disney’s new Infinity Vision technology.
Kathryn Newton Should Play Cassie Lang in Avengers: Endgame’s 2026 Re-Release
When Avengers: Endgame was released, Kathryn Newton hadn’t yet been chosen to play an older Cassie Lang. Although Cassie didn’t disappear during Thanos’ snap, she did grow up during those five years. In Endgame, Emma Fuhrmann played the 16-year-old version of Cassie, but Kathryn Newton took over the role as an 18-year-old in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Although it would be a shame to remove Emma Fuhrmann from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would logically make sense for the Russo brothers to swap her out for Kathryn Newton in the re-release of Avengers: Endgame. While Endgame hinted at a certain storyline, Quantumania showed that it wouldn’t happen. Now, with Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang poised to become a major character in the MCU’s future, reshooting Emma Fuhrmann’s brief scene with Newton would be a smart move.
With Endgame returning to theaters between Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it would be best not to use the previous version of Cassie Lang (Emma Fuhrmann). Instead, the scene of Scott and Cassie reuniting after Scott’s time in the Quantum Realm should be filmed again with Kathryn Newton. This would create a smoother connection between Endgame and the upcoming Doomsday, and establish Newton as the definitive Cassie Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cassie Lang’s Recasting History in the MCU Is Complicated
Kathryn Newton is now expected to be the main actor playing Cassie Lang, particularly as rumors grow about a potential Young Avengers or Champions team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a team Cassie has a central role in within the comics. While this is the third time the character has been recast, making its casting history quite complicated, Newton first appeared as Cassie in 2023. However, the character of Cassie Lang was originally introduced in the 2015 film, Ant-Man.
Abby Ryder Fortson, known for her roles in Transparent and Togetherness, played Cassie Lang in the first two Ant-Man movies. She was six years old when filming began in 2014 and nine when she returned for Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018. However, the character of Cassie Lang was meant to be older in Avengers: Endgame due to the time jump, and Fortson had aged out of the role.
Let’s talk about the recasting of Cassie Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Young Emma Fuhrmann originally took on the role, stepping in as Scott Lang’s daughter five years after the devastating snap in Avengers: Endgame. However, Marvel surprised everyone in 2020 by bringing in Kathryn Newton to play Cassie going forward. Honestly, it felt like a move driven by a desire for stronger on-screen chemistry with Paul Rudd and, frankly, a more recognizable face. Newton had already built a solid fanbase with roles in shows like Big Little Lies and The Society, so it made sense from a studio perspective, even if it was a bit disappointing for Fuhrmann’s fans.
Avengers: Endgame’s Re-Release Will Create Important Connections to Doomsday
Several characters, including Cassie Lang, could see improvements with the planned September 2026 re-release of Avengers: Endgame. The re-release aims to create a stronger link between Endgame and the upcoming Doomsday film. Rumors suggest we might see more of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s story in the alternate timeline, and potentially a hint of what’s to come.
Although some characters in Avengers: Endgame could have benefited from further development, the re-release is good news for both Marvel Studios and Disney. The film was once very close to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, but Avatar regained the lead with its 2021 re-release. This new release of Endgame has a good chance of pushing it back into the number one spot, as it’s currently less than $200 million behind Avatar’s record.
As a Marvel fan, I’m already counting down the days to 2026! This re-release of Endgame is a game-changer, and I think it’s going to really benefit the upcoming Doomsday film. The tweaks they’ve made could reshape how we see these returning heroes, affecting their relationships and even the overall flow of the MCU timeline. Honestly, I’m particularly excited to see what they do with Cassie Lang. Hopefully, we’ll get a good look at Kathryn Newton’s portrayal and some much-needed adjustments to her character’s story.
