Katie Thurston Has Double Mastectomy Surgery Amid Breast Cancer Battle

Katie Thurston has turned the page on a difficult chapter of her cancer journey.

Former contestant on The Bachelorette, Katie, had a double mastectomy on April 29th to treat her stage four breast cancer. Her husband, Jeff Arcuri, kept fans updated and praised her strength, calling her a “beautiful badass.”

Jeff, who married Katie last March, shared on Instagram on April 29th that she is doing well and remains positive. He promised to provide updates when he’s able.

Oh my gosh, while we were all waiting for updates, he shared the cutest thing! Apparently, Katie’s been keeping her spirits SO high before the surgery. She even posted a video making fun of her hospital gown! It was laying funny on her chest and she joked that it made her boobs look huge – she’s just the sweetest, even when she’s getting ready for something big like this! I seriously can’t handle how adorable she is.

“These are my new boobs actually,” she joked. “It’s for you, baby.”

Later that day, the comedian shared an update saying Katie’s surgery was successful and she was recovering well.

Katie later shared a video showing she was doing well enough to enjoy hospital food and watch the movie Monsters, Inc.

Katie spoke gratefully about her husband, Jeff, saying he was taking excellent care of her in the hospital. She showed the camera an empty chair beside her bed, explaining that he was staying overnight with her.

To which Jeff shrugged, “That’s all I need.”

Just over a month after announcing her decision to have a double mastectomy and step back from social media, Katie recently shared an update on her cancer treatment.

In an Instagram post on March 20th, Katie told her fans she was doing alright and just needed some time to recharge.

The FBoy Island alum went on to thank her followers for their ongoing support, adding, “F–k cancer.”

Oh my god, it feels like forever ago, but Katie first told us she had breast cancer in February 2025. Then, just a month later, she shared the devastating news that it had spread – stage four, with it reaching her liver. She recently told People magazine that it honestly feels like she’s lived ‘three lifetimes’ since that first diagnosis. It’s just… heartbreaking to think about how much she’s been through.

When asked about her decision to have a double mastectomy, even with uncertain test results, Katie explained she wanted to do absolutely everything possible to improve her odds of beating cancer.

In the summer of 2024, Katie Thurston found a small lump in her breast. She initially dismissed it, thinking it might be related to her menstrual cycle or just muscle soreness from exercise. Katie had a non-cancerous cyst removed from the same breast when she was 20, so she assumed this new lump was likely the same. However, when the lump didn’t disappear, she decided to see a doctor. She shared on Instagram in February 2025 that she’d gone to the doctor expecting good news, but unfortunately, she was mistaken.

Katie received a breast ultrasound after her doctor recommended she see a specialist. This was followed by a mammogram and then a biopsy. She shared in a video on Instagram on March 18, 2025, that she wouldn’t know for sure if she had cancer until after those tests. She described the moment she received her diagnosis, revealed on Good Morning America on March 19, 2025, as the worst feeling of her life, especially since there was no history of breast cancer in her family. As a 34-year-old, she felt unprepared for such news.

Katie first told her followers about her stage 3 diagnosis on February 15, 2025. In an Instagram post, she explained the rollercoaster of emotions she experienced – despair, anger, sadness, and denial – before finding strength and a sense of purpose. She admitted to crying a lot.

She plans to share her journey publicly, hoping to support others facing similar challenges. She explained that she had searched for stories from young women with breast cancer – including those dealing with invasive ductal carcinoma, mastectomies, and pregnancy after cancer – and found them helpful. She wants to be that source of support for others. She acknowledged that accepting her diagnosis was the hardest part, but she is now ready to fight.

Katie received her diagnosis just five months after getting engaged to comedian Jeff Arcuri, whom she met on Instagram in spring 2024. She shared with GMA that they had been envisioning wedding plans and starting a family, but now their focus is on her treatment and recovery.

To protect her future fertility during cancer treatment, Katie and Jeff underwent IVF. They retrieved 17 eggs, but only 6 were successfully fertilized. After further testing, they were able to freeze two viable embryos. Katie detailed the process on Instagram, explaining the realities of IVF.

She also mentioned considering surrogacy in the future, emphasizing that their priority is her health. She asked for understanding regarding celebrities who choose surrogacy, noting that people often don’t know the full story behind their decisions. Despite hoping to have children, Katie and Jeff are also content with the possibility of remaining a childless couple.

Katie and Jeff decided to get married on March 22, 2025, in New York, after Katie moved across the country to be with him following months of a long-distance relationship.

They held a small, intimate ceremony in their apartment’s backyard with their parents, the officiant, and their new dog, Charlie. Katie shared with Us Weekly how sweet the decision was, explaining that with her undergoing chemotherapy, they wanted to ensure they could celebrate their love regardless of what the future held. Jeff surprised her one night by saying he wanted to reaffirm his love and commitment, and proposed getting married the very next day.

While they plan to have a larger wedding later, Katie said Jeff’s quick proposal was his way of showing he’ll be there for her through everything, in sickness and in health.

Jeff also explained there was a practical reason for wanting to marry Katie right away. He wanted to have the legal recognition of being her husband so he could be fully present with her during hospital visits, stating, ‘There’s more power to that. I don’t want to be not with you for any of this.’

Just days after getting married, Katie received some difficult news: a scan revealed stage 4 cancer. In a video posted on March 28, 2025, she acknowledged that a stage 4 diagnosis can be frightening, but she remained hopeful. She explained that because her cancer is triple-positive, the spots on her liver are small, and they were found early, she feels positive about her prognosis.

Katie recently shared an update on her cancer treatment after receiving a stage 4 diagnosis. Initially, her plan was to begin six rounds of chemotherapy, as the cancer in her liver had spread from her breast. However, just before starting treatment, she received surprising news. Recent tests showed she was HER2 negative, despite earlier tests indicating she was HER2 positive. This meant her original treatment plan needed to be reevaluated.

As a result, chemotherapy is likely no longer an option. While she acknowledges this is potentially good news, Katie expressed frustration with the multiple changes to her diagnosis over the past two months. She believes that thorough testing and seeking a second opinion have been crucial in understanding her cancer and navigating her treatment journey.

Katie is facing her cancer diagnosis with courage, taking each day as it comes. In a recent post, she admitted to moments of frustration, wondering what life has in store, but emphasized the importance of making the most of her situation. While she acknowledges the common advice to ‘live like you’re dying,’ she finds it challenging in practice, recognizing that everyone is ultimately facing mortality. Despite the difficulties, Katie focuses on gratitude and cherishing each moment, with or without cancer. She also wants to encourage others to prioritize their health. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Katie urged her followers not to delay getting checked for potential health issues, emphasizing that early detection could be life-saving.

Nearly two months in treatment, Katie shared another new reality.

In an Instagram post from June 1, 2025, she revealed she’s been experiencing memory loss. She described a recent experience at customs where an officer asked her where she was traveling from, and she realized she couldn’t recall.

She mentioned having a minor disagreement with her husband, though she couldn’t recall the specifics.

I told Jeff, ‘This has happened before.’ He asked when, and I replied that I didn’t know exactly, but I was certain it had.

She said they can look back and laugh now, but cancer is awful. She alternates between telling herself to stop feeling sorry for herself and acknowledging that it’s okay to feel down, because cancer is truly terrible.

Katie is having a double mastectomy in April 2026, and she explained her decision to People magazine in February. Even though the benefits weren’t certain, she said she wanted to do everything possible to improve her odds of a positive outcome.
