Keegan-Michael Key has a clear vision for how the story of Toad should continue, now that the movie is out of theaters and available to stream or purchase digitally.
I’m interested in learning about Toad’s early life. We haven’t delved into his background yet, and I’m curious about how mushroom people even begin. Are they simply grown from the ground? It’s probably not a pairing of two mushrooms, right? And when Toad first appears, is his personality already formed, or does it develop as he grows?
Key revisited his role as Toad in the Super Mario movies, recognizing the character’s growing importance throughout the two films. He explained that Toad goes on a journey of self-discovery, comparing their dynamic to Robin and Batman, with Peach as Batman and Toad as her sidekick, especially as seen in the Super Mario Galaxy storyline.
Toad feels like a classic action hero, and he’s always been incredibly resilient. I’m really interested in exploring his backstory – what his life was like before he met Peach. I’d love to see a younger Toad and understand his personality and place in the world before Peach entered the picture. What was he like then, and how did he fit into his community?
Key has a clear idea for how to develop Toad’s character if he returns in a future Super Mario movie. He envisions a prequel showing Toad as he was when Mario first encountered him, exploring his backstory and the events that unfolded before Princess Peach became involved. He wants to show Toad’s growth amidst the conflicts and history that shaped their world.
Illumination’s Super Mario Movie Series Joins A Growing Trend
Given the success of video game movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat, an animated Super Mario movie always seemed likely. Featuring a well-known voice cast, the film brings the classic Nintendo game to life with impressive animation, taking the visuals to a new level. While video games continue to be a popular source for movies and shows, the quality of these adaptations can vary greatly.
In his review, Brooks determined that The Super Mario Bros. Movie gets it right by focusing on a heartfelt story and staying true to the original game. It’s a fun, family-friendly film filled with clever references and surprising characters that feel naturally integrated into the plot. The voice acting is excellent, and the new characters are enjoyable, making the movie a welcome distraction. However, because the film is relatively short, some viewers might find themselves wanting more, as it quickly builds excitement and then ends rather abruptly.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now streaming.
