Kevin Hart and Ice Cube both became successful actors independently before starring together in a 2014 comedy film, now available on Hulu. Throughout November, Hulu has been adding new movies and shows, but only a few titles remain for this month, including Bride Hard, The Assistant, and The First Omen. Earlier this month, Hulu also added a somewhat controversial action comedy and its less-than-stellar follow-up.
The movies Ride Along and Ride Along 2 have been streaming on Hulu since November 1st. They star Kevin Hart as Ben Barber, a rookie police academy recruit, and Ice Cube as James Payton, his future brother-in-law and a seasoned police officer. Directed by Tim Story, the films follow Hart’s character as he comically attempts to prove he’s capable of becoming a police officer and marrying his future sister-in-law.
Kevin Hart and Ice Cube Are the Best Part of the Ride Along Series
Okay, let’s be real – Ride Along and Ride Along 2 aren’t exactly cinematic masterpieces. They’re pretty average, and critics definitely weren’t fans – the first one landed at a dismal 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second did even worse at 15%. Audiences were a little kinder, but still, neither film really wowed anyone. Honestly, the plots and action felt really uninspired and relied heavily on tired buddy-cop tropes. But, I have to admit, the chemistry between Kevin Hart and Ice Cube is genuinely funny – they play off each other really well, even if the whole thing feels a bit… predictable.
Kevin Hart’s energetic acting style clashes perfectly with Ice Cube’s serious and stoic delivery, which is what makes the movie funny. Their different personalities create a fantastic comedic partnership that works well in both films. This chemistry makes them enjoyable to watch, even when the story isn’t strong, and explains why the movies have been popular with audiences.
As a critic, I remember when Ride Along and its sequel really took off – over $150 and $120 million at the box office respectively! Naturally, talk of a third film started almost immediately. In fact, back in 2016, Ride Along 3 was supposedly in the early stages of development. But things stalled. Just recently, I heard Ice Cube tell Entertainment Tonight that they’re still trying to crack the right story. He says they need a concept that makes a third movie worthwhile, something that stands on its own. Sounds like they’re still working it out, but they definitely haven’t forgotten about it.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu added a bunch of new movies at the beginning of the month, including Ride Along and Ride Along 2. You can now stream films like 13 Going On 30, The Last Duel, Love Actually, the classic The Sound Of Music (from 1965), Labyrinth, and Osiris. And there’s more coming in December! On December 1st, Hulu will start streaming Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, all the Home Alone movies, and Straight Outta Compton.
