Kick-Ass Is Back With It’s Biggest Release Yet (And We Mean That Literally)

Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. revolutionized the comic book world with Kick-Ass, which became a huge success, leading to sequels, spin-offs, and even movies. Now, the original story is being re-released in its most expansive edition ever, and you can find all the details here.

This summer, Image Comics is releasing a new paperback collection called the Kick-Ass Compendium. It gathers all four volumes of the original Kick-Ass series—covering issues #1-8 for each volume—into one large book. You’ll be able to find it in stores on August 12th.

What Is Kick-Ass, And What Happened To The Franchise?

The movie Kick-Ass, which came out in 2008, follows Dave Lizewski, a regular guy who decided someone should try being a real superhero. He starts training, creates a costume, and attempts to fight crime, quickly realizing just how difficult it is. The film became popular for its realistic yet violent take on the superhero genre, featuring over-the-top situations and memorable characters like Big Daddy and Hit-Girl.

Although Dave’s storyline ended with Volume 4, the Kick-Ass universe continued thanks to a solo series for Hit-Girl, which ran for six volumes. In 2019, a new character took on the role of Kick-Ass – Patience Lee, a war veteran. This version of Kick-Ass lasted for four more volumes and then led into a crossover event called Kick-Ass Vs. Hit-Girl in 2020.

The latest installment, Big Game (set in 2023), leaps fifteen years ahead from the events of The Dave Lizewski Years. We find Dave (age 31) and Mindy (age 27) still fighting the good fight, but now they’re even more powerful. Hit-Girl has become part of the Kingsman team, and Dave has gained genuine superpowers through his connection with the Magic Order, leading him to join The Ambassadors.

The Kick-Ass series has been relatively quiet for a while, but now’s a great time to revisit Dave Lizewski’s story and how the whole franchise started. The Kick-Ass Compendium, collecting all the original stories, will be available at comic shops on August 12th and bookstores on September 8th.
