Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is famous for popular series like One Piece and Dragon Ball. For years, it’s launched new manga, but with limited space, many don’t last long if they don’t quickly gain popularity. A strong start is really important for a series to succeed, and Under Doctor seems secure for the time being. While it didn’t explode onto the scene like some rare hits such as Kagurabachi, it’s consistently popular with readers in both Japan and around the world. Created by Kyo Tanimoto, Under Doctor began publishing on January 25th, 2026, and its impressive first chapter immediately caught attention. After about six months, the manga will release its first collected volume on June 4th, 2026.

Before its release, the WSJ_manga account announced that the first volume of the manga will include a recommendation from Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia. This information came from a trusted source that regularly shares updates on Shonen Jump series. Horikoshi is a very popular manga artist whose series has sold over 100 million copies. Although Under Doctor is Tanimoto’s first serialized work, he previously assisted Horikoshi. Now, as Tanimoto’s series debuts, Horikoshi is offering his support. Currently, the announced release date is only for the Japanese version; an English release will follow in a few months.

What Is Under Doctor About?

The story follows Dr. Haiji Kino, an enigmatic physician with the unusual ability to fall asleep instantly, regardless of location. Despite this seeming quirk, he’s remarkably skilled because he can perceive glowing lights around people when he concentrates – a talent that shouldn’t be underestimated.

By observing subtle flaws in a person’s ‘glow,’ Haiji can pinpoint their vulnerabilities and accurately diagnose illnesses without needing tests. While treating a fellow passenger’s food poisoning on a flight, he realizes the plane has been hijacked. Fortunately, his abilities allow him not only to heal but also to exploit weaknesses, making him incredibly powerful. He swiftly rescues everyone onboard before secretly parachuting out to protect his identity.
