As a huge animation fan, I’m really excited about the new season of King of the Hill coming to Hulu this summer – it feels like a big deal! Even though The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball beat it out in a competition last year, I think it’s awesome that these revivals are happening. It’s like a win for everyone! I even heard from someone involved in another classic animated show that King of the Hill’s return might actually help bring back a really well-respected film critic who hasn’t put out a new review in ages. That would be fantastic!
After years of effort, the team behind the animated series The Critic – including creator Al Jean and voice actor Jon Lovitz – is seriously considering bringing the show back. In a recent podcast interview, Jean revealed they’re closer than ever to a reboot, and he believes it’s now more likely to happen than not. They’re currently discussing potential casting choices, with Lovitz enthusiastically on board.
Will Jay Sherman Return?

In addition to exciting news for fans of The Critic, Jean mentioned that the recent Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary celebration sparked renewed interest in bringing the show back. Jon Hamm was approached at the event by Jesse Eisenberg, who enthusiastically told him The Critic was his favorite show growing up. This reminded the team that a new generation appreciates the series, similar to how Jean loved Bullwinkle as a child. Seeing the successful reboots of King of the Hill and multiple revivals of Futurama further encouraged them to consider a revival of The Critic.
If you’ve never seen the funny animated show The Critic, all episodes are currently available to stream on Tubi. The show originally ran for two seasons, ending in 1995, but it briefly returned in 2001 with a short series online. It’s been over twenty years since any new episodes were made. With the creators and original voice actors eager to revisit the series, and the recent success of animated show revivals like King of the Hill, a comeback for The Critic feels possible.
