I remember when the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was announced – honestly, it looked like it was going to be a disaster! That initial Sonic design was… rough, to say the least. Thankfully, they listened to the fans and completely revamped him to be more like the game version, and it really turned things around. Now, here we are, three movies in (plus a TV show!), and the series is doing great. We’re getting Sonic the Hedgehog 4 next year, and they’re adding even more characters we love. The end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hinted at Amy Rose and Metal Sonic joining the fun, and just recently, with a big step forward in production, we got a fantastic first look at Metal Sonic himself!
Jeff Fowler, the director of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that filming has officially finished. He celebrated the wrap by sharing a picture of himself with a clapboard on set, alongside a physical model of Metal Sonic. You can see the post below.
What Metal Sonic’s Role in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Could Be
Director Jeff Fowler signaled the arrival of new characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 back in March by sharing a photo of Amy Rose’s hammer. Now, at the end of filming, he’s posted a picture of Metal Sonic, nicely bookending the production with images of both key additions to the movie’s cast. The focus on Metal Sonic has fans wondering how this character will be used as a villain in the film. It appears Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will draw inspiration from the Sonic CD video game, where both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic first appeared. In that game, Dr. Eggman created Metal Sonic to be Sonic’s ultimate rival.
Time travel became a part of the Sonic series with the game Sonic CD. There’s growing speculation that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will explore this concept further. Some fans think the Metal Sonics briefly shown after Sonic 3 might be from the future, sent back in time to defeat Sonic and his friends. There’s also a popular theory that the character Eggman Nega, a descendant of Dr. Robotnik who resents his family’s reputation, will appear. In the games, Eggman Nega created a more advanced Metal Sonic, and the films might adapt this storyline, portraying Nega as the mastermind behind the Metal Sonic army and their plan to cause chaos.
Team up Metal Sonic with Eggman Nega, and the Sonic movies could feel really revitalized. Eggman Nega is a much more menacing and cruel villain than the original Dr. Robotnik, offering a fresh and different conflict for the films. While Robotnik wants to take over the world, he’s always been a bit of a goofy, comedic character—which is why Jim Carrey was so great in the role. So far, the Sonic movies have done a good job of introducing new ideas and avoiding repeating themselves. Having Sonic and his friends face off against a truly ruthless, uncompromising version of Eggman would make the fourth movie especially memorable.
Filming on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is complete, but it will still be some time before we see any trailers or promotional content – hopefully revealing how Metal Sonic plays a role in the story. Now, the movie enters post-production, where visual effects for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and other characters will be finalized. A trailer probably won’t be released until later this year, as the film isn’t scheduled to come out until March 2027, so there’s no immediate need to share everything.
