Warhorse Studios, known for the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, has responded to rumors about them developing a large-scale Lord of the Rings role-playing game. Their response didn’t confirm or deny the project, leaving fans with a glimmer of hope that it could still be in the works.
So, I was checking out a Reddit AMA with the folks at Warhorse, and someone asked about that rumored Lord of the Rings RPG. They didn’t exactly confirm or deny anything – pretty standard! But they did say they’re definitely staying in the RPG world. Basically, they’re working on a new game, and they want to keep doing what they’re good at, which means more RPGs for us! It’s not a confirmation of which RPG, but it’s good to know they’re not abandoning the genre.
When asked directly if their next game would be based on The Lord of the Rings, Warhorse Studios remained vague, stating they are currently developing a large, immersive role-playing game, but couldn’t share any specifics.
Talk about a potential new game started with the Tolkien Polska podcast, which first suggested the studio was working on something related to Lord of the Rings. It’s currently unclear whether this rumored project is the large, detailed role-playing game they’ve been developing.
There’s more than one story circulating about game studios developing projects based on Tolkien’s world. Last month, reports suggested that Crystal Dynamics, known for Tomb Raider, might be working on a Lord of the Rings game. This comes after a previous attempt by Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Deus Ex, was cancelled. Leaked images and designs from that abandoned project have also appeared online.
In September 2025, it was reported that the Abu Dhabi Investment Office invested $100 million in a new Lord of the Rings game, aiming to rival the success of the popular 2023 title, Hogwarts Legacy. While Warhorse Studios or Crystal Dynamics might be developing the game, we won’t have a definitive answer until an official announcement is made.
