Kurt Russell didn’t escape from Los Angeles.
You know, Kurt Russell recently shared a really sweet reason why Goldie Hawn and I moved from California to Colorado way back in 1986. It really came down to family life. We felt it would just be a better, more relaxed environment for our kids and everyone, day to day. It was about creating a more grounded, normal life for our blended family, and honestly, it was the right decision for us.
Kurt shared with People magazine that he’s drawn to everything Colorado has to offer and hopes to eventually become a rancher, as he explained in an interview published on May 31st.
Kurt shared that after he and Goldie Hawn started dating in 1983, they built a ranch together a few years later, and their family has grown up there.
The family consists of Kurt Russell’s son, Wyatt Russell, 39, along with Goldie Hawn’s children from her marriage to Bill Hudson: Oliver Hudson, 49, and Kate Hudson, 46. Kurt also shares a son, Boston Russell, 46, with his former wife, Season Hubley.
Growing up isn’t the same as city life, Kurt observed, having spent his own childhood in Maine. His children have really benefited from being close to nature. While it presents challenges, it’s also incredibly fulfilling, and he simply feels more at home in that environment.
The 75-year-old actor, who earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017, explained that he wasn’t trying to leave Hollywood behind.
Kurt explained he didn’t have a problem with Los Angeles. He wasn’t trying to get away from anything, he simply lived there and was lucky that his location didn’t impact his life much.
He admitted it was an unconventional decision for the time, explaining, “Everyone thought I was making a mistake. People told me it would be the end of my career, but I wasn’t so sure.”

Kurt’s career flourished over the years, and he appeared in many popular movies. He often starred alongside Goldie Hawn, including in films like Overboard and The Christmas Chronicles.
Kurt jokingly suggested a unique approach to making a relationship work. He told The Daily Pop in 2020, “Only do it every 33 years!”

Following a serious heart attack in 2019, the actor best known for The Mask of Zorro returned to his hometown of Málaga, Spain, to dedicate himself to performing on stage.
“It really shifted my perspective on everything,” Antonio shared with The Times in March 2026. “Coming face to face with my own mortality made me realize that, at heart, I’m a stage actor.”
The Tony Award nominee, who still acts in TV and movies sometimes, now owns a theater and actively participates in local events.
He went on to say he’d never felt happier. Staying connected to his background, community, and the people he grew up with meant everything to him. He hadn’t lost that sense of belonging over time—in fact, it had only grown stronger.

After 19 seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 following accusations of a negative and harmful workplace. These claims led to an internal investigation, the firing of several executives, and widespread public criticism.
Ellen made a comeback with her last standup comedy show, For Your Approval, which premiered on Netflix in September 2024. Before the show’s release, she announced her plans to retire from Hollywood.
During her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up tour, the comedian told the audience, “This is the last time you’re going to see me.” She explained that she’s retiring after releasing her upcoming Netflix special, according to SFGate.
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have settled in the Cotswolds. Ellen shared with Richard Bacon in July 2025, during a conversation at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, that they decided to remain there after Donald Trump was reelected in November 2024.
She enthusiastically described the English countryside as ‘absolutely beautiful,’ telling the BBC that its charm was unlike anything she’d seen before. She particularly appreciated the picturesque villages, towns, and architecture, noting it offered a more relaxed and simple way of life.
“It’s just a nicer place,” Ellen explained. “The animals are well cared for, and everyone is so friendly. We really love living here. We moved in November, which wasn’t the best timing, but I finally got to see snow! Portia brought her horses with her, I have chickens, and we even had sheep for a couple of weeks.”

Tyra Banks, host of America’s Next Top Model, decided to move to Australia partly to focus on her ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream. She explained on Today with Jenna & Friends that her business had been primarily supplying ice cream to places like airlines and cruise ships, and she’d been traveling to Australia frequently to oversee production at a large facility there. She quickly fell in love with the country during her visits.
She also recognized Australia as a strong market for her product, noting that it’s one of the top three countries in the world for ice cream consumption, alongside America and New Zealand.
Banks ultimately moved to Australia with her son, York (whose father is her ex, Erik Asla), and her boyfriend, Louis Bélanger-Martin, sharing that Australia has been a wonderful experience for her and her family.

Eva Longoria, known for her role on Desperate Housewives, has moved from Los Angeles and now splits her time between Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago. She explained to Marie Claire that while she spent her adult life in Los Angeles, the city had changed, and the pandemic accelerated that change. Factors like homelessness and taxes also contributed to her decision, though she doesn’t want to criticize California.
Longoria clarified to The View: Behind the Table that her move wasn’t politically motivated by the election. She initially went to Spain for a six-month filming project, then to Mexico for four months, and has been based there for years as a result of her work. She feels fortunate to be able to leave the U.S. when many Americans aren’t so lucky, expressing anxiety and sadness for those who are. Despite the move, Longoria remains active in her career, with recent roles in Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.

Actor Richard Gere has relocated from Chicago to Spain with his family. He shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2024 that his wife, Alejandra Silva, who is from Galicia, encouraged the move, and they plan to live in Madrid for several years. Gere is excited about the opportunity for their young sons, Alexander and James, to thrive in a bilingual environment. He also has an adult son, Homer, with ex-wife Carey Lowell. The whole family seems to be adjusting well. In a January 2025 interview with Elle España, Gere said they are happier than ever and are really enjoying this new chapter in their lives.

Singer Christina Milian and her family have officially moved to Paris. Married to French singer Matt Pokora for nearly a decade, the couple previously spent half the year traveling between the U.S. and France. They made the decision to settle in Paris so their children—Violet (from a previous marriage), and sons Isaiah and Kenna—could attend school there. Milian shared that her kids are thriving and have embraced the French language and culture. She enjoys an active lifestyle and appreciates the balance of being able to focus on work while her children are in school. She describes life in Paris as healthy and wonderful for her family.

Lindsay Lohan is frustrated by the ongoing speculation surrounding her decision to leave Los Angeles. Looking back on her busy career and social life in the early 2000s, she recently explained her reasons for stepping away from the public eye. In an interview with Bustle in March 2024, the Parent Trap star said she felt her work was often overshadowed by the constant attention of the paparazzi, which she found frustrating. She wished the focus could have remained on her career and felt the relentless media coverage spiraled out of control, ultimately prompting her desire to disappear from the spotlight. She wanted to ensure her work, not just a sensational story, received attention. Lindsay subsequently moved overseas, first to London and then to Dubai, also opening beach clubs in Greece, seeking a more private life.
Lindsay Lohan admitted she worried she might never find love, wondering if that part of her life would ever happen. She realized she needed to focus on herself before she could open herself up to new possibilities and receive the opportunities she truly wanted.
She eventually found love with Bader Shammas, and they married in 2022, welcoming their son, Luai, in 2023.
Although they currently live in Dubai, Lindsay hasn’t left acting behind. She continues to appear in films like Our Little Secret, Irish Wish, and Freakier Friday.

Josh decided to leave Hollywood after some careful thought. He explained to People magazine in July 2024 that Hollywood isn’t just a location, but a whole way of life. He wanted to avoid being constantly surrounded by talk of movies, feeling that would limit his perspective. He longed for a life filled with diverse experiences and personal growth, describing that as “the spice of life.”
So, Josh, along with his wife Tamsin Egerton and their four children, moved to the countryside of Hampshire, England. He told The Guardian in July 2024 that time flies with a large family, and while life might seem simpler, it’s filled with what truly matters. Despite the move, Josh has remained active in his career, appearing in films like Verity, Fight or Flight, and Trap.

Many fans may not realize Jesse no longer lives in Los Angeles. He revealed in a February 2025 interview with CBS News Sunday Morning that he’s lived in Indiana for the past ten years, finding it a more comfortable and stable environment. Despite being an Oscar nominee, Jesse leads a surprisingly ordinary life with his wife, Anna Strout, and son, Banner. He avoids social media and doesn’t spend much time networking within the entertainment industry, which helps him maintain a sense of normalcy. His wife is a teacher, and his son isn’t even a big movie fan, further distancing him from the pressures of Hollywood and allowing him to avoid constantly worrying about his place in the industry.

Eliza Dushku, known for her roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the movie Bring It On, announced in September 2024 that she’s now a certified psychedelic-assisted therapist and is continuing her education in the field of mental health.
She told Boston Magazine that she was able to change her life’s path to prioritize her own well-being, with the goal of then helping others heal. She felt it was important to share the positive changes she’d experienced – the peace and renewed passion she felt – because she now clearly understood her true calling and purpose.

The actress best known for playing Wilma Flintstone shared that she relocated to Ireland in January 2025 with her son, Clay, and is working to become an Irish citizen because of her family’s heritage. While she mentioned current political issues as a factor in her decision to move, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning to her home country in the future.
In a TikTok video, she shared that she misses her children, her friends, and many aspects of her life back home. She’s working on building a new life in this country, and she and her family will think about returning to America when it’s a safe and equitable place for everyone.

Actress Evangeline Lilly, known for her role in Ant-Man and the Wasp, has said she’s stepping away from acting for an undetermined amount of time after a two-decade career.
In a June 2024 Instagram post, Evangeline shared how happy and at peace she feels while pursuing her dreams. She expressed gratitude for her good fortune, explaining that while choosing a path less traveled – one that prioritizes purpose over things like money and fame – can be frightening, it ultimately leads to a much more satisfying life.
She’s not ruling out a return to Hollywood, saying, “I could go back someday, but right now, I’m happy where I am.”

Since finishing his role in the 2019 Netflix series V-Wars, the actor best known from The Vampire Diaries has been focusing on a personal mission: fighting climate change by working to improve soil health around the world.
Ian, who has two children with his wife Nikki Reed, took a break from acting over four years ago to focus on his family and businesses. He was also working to release two documentaries, Kiss the Ground (released in 2020) and Common Ground, both of which highlight the importance of regenerative farming. He shared this with TopMob News in November 2023.
Looking ahead, the actor said he plans to become a rancher and focus on building lasting brands – including his bourbon and wellness company. He’s deeply committed to regenerative agriculture and healthy soil practices, values he and his family embrace. He explained this is his life’s path, and that’s why these things are so important to him – it’s simply who he is and who he’s becoming.

In a February 2021 episode of her podcast, Empty Inside, former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy revealed to guest Anna Faris that she had stopped acting a few years prior. She’s now pursuing writing and directing, alongside hosting the podcast.
Jennette shared that she regrets many of the acting roles she took in the past, detailing these feelings in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. She explained she often feels dissatisfied with her career and finds the roles she played cheesy and embarrassing. Having worked from age 13 to 21, she was already self-conscious about being on those shows by the time she was 15, feeling it wasn’t something her friends were impressed by.
Despite her past experiences, she hasn’t ruled out returning to acting. She explained to TopMob News in October 2022 that writing her book helped her consider acting in a new light, free from the pressures she felt before. She believes the only way she might consider it again would be if she wrote a role specifically for herself.

It seemed like a pretty easy decision. The chance to marry Prince Harry, devote ourselves to causes we care about, and wear the Queen’s tiaras would definitely make leaving Hollywood worthwhile.
Similar to Grace Kelly’s journey from Hollywood to Monaco, Meghan Markle transitioned from her acting career in Toronto—where she starred in the show Suits—to a life as a member of the British Royal Family. Now that she and Prince Harry have stepped down as senior royals and moved to Montecito, California, Meghan is returning to professional life, starting with a multi-year production deal with Netflix.
She has already released the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan and is preparing a lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, set to launch in 2025 on the streaming service. Additionally, she’s started a podcast and launched her own brand, As Ever.

After starring in over 40 films since she began her career with 1994’s The Mask, the actress really needed a rest when she finished filming Annie in 2014.
Honestly, I totally get why she needed a change. She told Gwyneth that she just realized she wanted something different from life. She’d been working non-stop, filming movie after movie, and it really took a toll. She described it as a real grind, and she’s so right – when you’re making a film, it completely consumes you. They pretty much own your time, and you’re on set for twelve hours a day, months on end, leaving absolutely no room for anything else in your life.
Cameron Diaz had many interests she wanted to pursue, including writing—she followed up her 2013 bestseller, The Body Book, with The Longevity Book in 2016—and starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. While she told InStyle in 2019 that she didn’t miss acting and was focused on wellness, it seemed she might be open to returning to performing at least one more time.
Jamie Foxx explained to TopMob News how they convinced Cameron Diaz to star in the 2025 Netflix movie Back in Action. He said they practically pleaded with her, getting down on their knees to ask her to do it. “We love her and have been waiting for her to return – this is going to be amazing!”

Okay, so Terrence Howard said it himself – no more! After five amazing years as Lucious Lyon on Empire, he was SO firm about not doing another season, or anything acting-related, really. I remember seeing the Extra interview before the final season aired in 2019, and he literally said, ‘Oh, I’m done with acting. I’m done pretending.’ It broke my heart, but he seemed so… resolute! I just can’t believe he meant it, honestly. It felt like he was saying goodbye to everything! I’m still hoping for a reunion, but he seemed so done.
Despite taking on a few roles here and there, the Academy Award nominee announced his intention to retire from acting again in 2022 while promoting his Peacock series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. He explained to ET that he felt he’d given his all as an actor and now wanted to focus on enjoying and watching new talent, rather than simply repeating performances of his own.
Even with those earlier concerns, Howard has continued to act, appearing in shows like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and the Netflix film Shirley. He also has several other projects planned for the future.

After his character, King Joffrey, died on the show in 2014, the 21-year-old actor told EW he was leaving acting. He explained that he’d been acting since he was a child, but simply wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore.
Jack wasn’t a child star anymore, and some of the initial excitement had faded. He explained that turning acting into a career felt different. “Before, it was just something fun I did with friends or during the summer,” he said. “I liked it, but when you rely on something for income, it changes how you feel about it. It’s not that I dislike it, it’s just not my ideal career path.”
After taking six years off, Jack returned to acting in 2020 with a role in the BBC series Out of Her Mind. Since then, he’s also been in films such as Rebecca’s Boyfriend and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and TV shows including Safe Harbor and The Famous Five.

After landing the role in the September 2020 virtual table read of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jennifer Aniston married actor Kevin Kline in 1989. They decided to stagger their work schedules so they could both be available to care for their children, Owen and Greta, who is now a singer known as Frankie Cosmos.
He added that Phoebe consistently prioritizes staying home with her children whenever she’s scheduled to work. While she briefly appeared in her friend Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 2001 independent film, The Anniversary Party, Cates primarily focuses on running her New York City store, Blue Tree.

During the peak of his success with films like Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the actor paused his career after his wife tragically passed away from breast cancer in 1991. He wanted to dedicate his time to raising his children, Rachel and Mitchell.
Despite not appearing in a live-action movie since 1997 – he even turned down a small role in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake – Rick remains a beloved figure, as shown by the strong reaction to news of an assault he experienced while walking in New York City in 2020. Fortunately, fans will be happy to hear he’s returning to the screen alongside Josh Gad in the upcoming Disney reboot, Shrunk.

After marrying fashion designer Adam Kimmel in 2010, actress Drew Barrymore suggested she was considering stepping back from acting. She told Vogue that most roles require intimate scenes, and she wasn’t interested in pursuing them. While she felt her relationship was secure enough to handle potentially challenging roles, she believed any work she took on needed to be truly exceptional to be worth it.
After her son, Martin, joined his sister, Louisanna, in 2014, she firmly decided to step away from acting. She told Us Weekly in 2016 that she felt like an outsider to the movie world and was now focused on being a mom. She also helps her husband, Kimmel, with his work and enjoys painting, adding that raising her children was the main reason she stopped pursuing acting.

She’d starred in popular shows like Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, and Scandal. After those roles, the Australian actress began to feel like it was time for a change.
Okay, so I was turning 45, and honestly, I was starting to feel like I needed a huge change. I’d been acting for so long, and I could pretty much see the next decade or two playing out the same way. It just didn’t feel…enough. I needed something totally different, a real challenge! So, I took a leap of faith and decided to quit acting and try my hand at building a business. It was scary, but I knew I had to do something new!
Her company, General Public, which creates art for everyone, was almost complete – she just needed to finish one last piece.
I spoke with Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, and told him I wouldn’t be interested in a fifth season because I had decided to stop acting. He was very understanding and supportive, and we had a good talk. Surprisingly, he ended up writing my character into five episodes.

You know, as someone who follows creative careers closely, I completely understand needing to redefine what ‘success’ looks like. After Daniel Day-Lewis won his third Academy Award, it felt like he’d truly reached the pinnacle of his profession. So, it wasn’t entirely surprising when, after his sixth Oscar nomination for Phantom Thread in 2017, he announced his retirement from acting. His team released a statement saying he was incredibly thankful for all his collaborators and fans over the years, and that this was a deeply personal decision – one he and his representatives wouldn’t be discussing further. It just proves that sometimes, even after achieving incredible things, it’s time to move on to new chapters.
Just as Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a new project drew him back in. In October 2024, Focus Features revealed he would star in Anemone, a film he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who will also be directing.

I’ve been such a fan of Bridgit Mendler since Good Luck Charlie, so I was really surprised when she stepped away from acting in 2018! It turns out she was incredibly focused on her education – she went to MIT and actually earned both a master’s degree and a PhD there! And as if that wasn’t enough, she then decided to go to Harvard Law School! It’s amazing to see how dedicated she is to learning.
On top of everything else, Bridgit started her own company, Northwood Space, in February 2023. The company is building ground stations to facilitate communication with satellites, and Bridgit is serving as its CEO.
