What Obsession’s Ending Really Means

The movie Obsession has become a huge success. Director Curry Barker made the film for around $1 million (or even less), but it’s already earned nearly $150 million in theaters. What’s more, weeks after its release, more and more people are going to see it, thanks to fantastic reviews from both professional critics and regular moviegoers.

The movie, starring Michael Johnston (known from Teen Wolf and X-Men ’97) and Inde Navarrette (Superman & Lois), presents a simple horror story about the dangers of making wishes. While the plot is easy to follow, the ending includes some surprising turns that have led to a lot of discussion about the film’s true meaning and what message it’s trying to convey.

Obsession Ending Explained (SPOILERS)

The thriller Obsession starts with Bear Bailey, a troubled young man, breaking a branch from a “One Wish Willow” hoping Nikki Freeman, a girl he likes, will fall in love with him. His wish comes true, but with frightening consequences. Nikki becomes completely obsessed with Bear, unable to function without him. The situation escalates tragically when someone is violently murdered, and Bear realizes he must reverse his wish. In a desperate attempt, Bear tries to use two more One Wish Willow branches, but finds he can’t break them. He then asks his friend, Ian, to make a wish instead, but Ian selfishly wishes for a billion dollars, and unexpectedly gets it.

In a tragic climax, Nikki kills Ian, and Bear attempts suicide to free Nikki from the consequences of their wish. However, Nikki discovers a final willow branch and makes a desperate wish: that Bear would love her as deeply as he once did. The wish takes effect as Bear is overdosing on pills, instantly pulling him towards Nikki, who he embraces before succumbing to the poison. Devastated, Nikki tries to end her own life, but Bear’s wish unexpectedly breaks at the last moment. She drops the gun, left horrified and confused amidst the bodies of her friends and the surrounding blood, and begins to scream uncontrollably.

The Deeper Meaning of Obsession’s Wish Magic

Some viewers are misunderstanding a crucial part of Obsession‘s story: the nature of the wish granted by the One Wish Willow. The film strongly implies, through its visuals, that something other than Nikki herself is driving her obsession, starting from the moment the change begins. While the mythology isn’t fully explained – and doesn’t need to be – the film consistently hints at this underlying force.

The film is particularly striking in scenes where Nikki’s face is hidden in shadow, but her eyes glow with an unsettling light—a testament to the cinematographer’s skill. The film explores a complete takeover of someone’s will and mind, making “Possession” a more fitting title than “Obsession.” This idea powerfully underlies the film’s broader, and often disturbing, themes. Ironically, the title refers to Bear’s pursuit of Nikki’s affection, even through unsettling and unwanted advances, which serves as a metaphor for harmful and potentially abusive behavior.

Ultimately, both Bear and Nikki lose and then regain control over their own choices. Bear’s loss of control happens when he fails to sacrifice himself to save Nikki – a decision explained by his fear, according to the actors and director. As a result, Nikki takes away his ability to choose and forces him to reciprocate her feelings. Nikki doesn’t need to seek revenge by harming Bear; his past actions have consequences of their own.

In contrast, Nikki’s story ends with her getting revenge and finally understanding the terrible things that happened to her. While the movie changed from a truly dark ending, Nikki still survives the manipulation, though she’s left deeply traumatized and will never fully heal. Her final scream is a powerful moment that can be interpreted in different ways – some see it as a funny, ironic twist, others as a shocking outcome, and still others as a commentary on the damaging effects of being objectified.
