Warning: Contains spoilers for Landman season 2 episode 1.
Taylor Sheridan always has a lot on his plate. Besides starring in and creating the popular Yellowstone universe, he’s also developing gripping, dramatic series like Landman, filled with ambition, conflict, and unexpected plot twists.
The show’s first season was a huge hit with viewers, becoming Paramount’s most popular original series. An impressive 35 million people watched the first episode, and the season ended with record-high ratings.
When the release date for Landman season 2 was announced, it was no surprise that dedicated fans immediately began speculating about what the next ten episodes would hold for Tommy Norris and his relationship with his son, Cooper.
During the first season, Cooper struck out on his own after the M-Tex explosion, buying small plots of land hoping to make a profit. Ultimately, he planned to buy and sell oil-rich property to earn enough money to acquire the valuable Wolfcamp oil shale.
What felt like a pipe dream is quickly becoming a reality, though.
The season begins with Cooper hitting a major oil strike, instantly making him wealthy. He estimates the well, which is producing around 6,200 barrels of oil, will earn back its investment costs in just two months.
He’s making incredibly good money – around $29,000 each day, which adds up to about $880,000 monthly. That’s over $10 million per year, and he intends to drill many more wells to continue earning.
As a film buff, I noticed that this first episode subtly sets up a really interesting conflict. It’s clear Tommy’s getting richer, and that’s going to bring him head-to-head with Cooper, especially M-Tex, and ultimately, with his own dad. It feels like a powder keg waiting to explode!
Fans of the show Landman are discussing predictions for season 2 on Reddit, and many believe Cooper and Tommy will become competitors. One viewer suggested this is likely because they’re expected to employ similar drilling techniques.
One person suggested M-Tex can’t afford to acquire Cooper’s expanding properties, leading Cooper to sell to their biggest rival. Another predicted a fierce competition this season between Cooper and Tommy, framing it as a battle for dominance in the oil industry.
And episode 1 does appear to back this theory up…

This demonstrates Cooper’s arrival as a major player, and he’s achieving it independently, even while openly challenging both M-Tex and his own father.
It’s possible Tommy and M-Tex will successfully buy Cooper, making the Norris family even wealthier and ensuring a happy ending for them. However, it would be much more exciting if Cooper partnered with TTP, M-Tex’s main rivals, instead.
He’s been holding a grudge against M-Tex ever since they mistreated the people affected by the season one explosion, so it’s no surprise he wants to get back at them now. This could ignite a major conflict over oil in Midland, but that’s precisely the type of intense storyline Taylor Sheridan loves to create.
