Disney’s newest animated movie is now the highest-grossing animated film in U.S. history. It’s a huge success for the studio, breaking previous box office records and changing what we expect from animated movies.
Zootopia 2 beats Inside Out 2 at global box office
Zootopia 2 is now the highest-grossing animated movie ever released by MPA, earning a total of $1.703 billion worldwide. It beat out Inside Out 2, which made $1.69 billion, and also surpassed the lifetime earnings of films like The Lion King (2019) at $1.663 billion and Jurassic World with $1.672 billion, according to Deadline.
Zootopia 2 reached a major financial achievement during its eighth weekend in theaters, earning $393 million domestically and $1.3 billion internationally. The film had a fantastic opening over Thanksgiving weekend, bringing in $559.5 million worldwide in just five days. This made it the biggest global opening ever for an animated movie and the highest debut for an animated film from Disney. Zootopia 2 also reached $1 billion worldwide faster than any other animated movie with a PG rating.
The film earned an impressive $618.9 million in China, making it the most successful animated movie ever released there by a major studio. It also performed well in Japan, bringing in $83 million, and in France, with $71.7 million. Additionally, Zootopia 2 is now the highest-grossing Walt Disney animated film in 26 countries, including China, France, and Mexico.
In 2025, Zootopia 2 was the highest-grossing animated movie worldwide. The entire Zootopia and related film series has now earned a total of $2.7 billion. Walt Disney Studios dominates the global animated movie market, with Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2, and Frozen 2 being their top three highest-earning animated films.
As of Box Office Mojo’s latest data, Zootopia 2 has earned $393.2 million in the United States, which makes up about 23% of its worldwide earnings. The remaining 77% came from moviegoers in other countries. Currently, the highest-grossing animated film worldwide is China’s Ne Zha 2, with a total of $2.2 billion.
