It hasn’t been a month since the release of the latest main Resident Evil game, Resident Evil Requiem, and already there’s a lot of talk about what Capcom might do next with the series. The biggest rumor is that they’re working on a complete remake of the original Resident Evil. While nothing has been officially announced, these rumors aren’t coming from nowhere – they’re appearing from sources considered fairly reliable.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) named Stiviwonder – who previously leaked accurate information about downloadable content, confirmed by leaker Dusk Golem – has shared news about a possible remake of the original Resident Evil. They claim that a remake has been in the early stages of development since 2022 or 2023. If this is true, we might not have to wait too long to see it, though it probably won’t be the next Resident Evil remake Capcom releases.
RE1 Remake Might Be Coming Soon
Capcom
Even though rumors about Resident Evil should be treated with skepticism, there’s a possibility that a remake of the original Resident Evil is in the works. Reports suggest development may have started as early as 2022, and it could potentially be released in the next few years. Ultimately, the release date will likely depend on Capcom’s overall plans for future game releases.
Don’t Expect This One First
It would have been great to see a modern remake of the original Resident Evil before the remake of Resident Evil 2 came out. However, it’s good that it’s happening now, even if it’s a bit later than expected.
Everything suggests that the next Resident Evil remake will be Code: Veronica, with a remake of Resident Evil 0 planned to follow. So far, there’s been no news about remakes of Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil: Revelations.
Remaking Resident Evil 0 before Resident Evil 1 could make the Resident Evil 1 remake more satisfying. This is because both games feature the same character, Rebecca Chambers, and Resident Evil 0’s story directly sets up the events of Resident Evil 1. This suggests a Resident Evil 1 remake isn’t as high a priority right now, but it could still be released before the next mainline game, Resident Evil 10.
It’s hard to say how long it will take for the next main Resident Evil game to be released. Depending on the story, several remakes might need to come out first. This would ensure newer players, who are familiar with the series only through the remakes, aren’t confused if the new game references events from older titles like Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 1, or Resident Evil Code: Veronica – games that are still waiting to be remade.
