Legends ending explained: Did the team take down Carter?

*Warning – contains full spoilers for all six episodes of Legends.*

You can now watch all six episodes of Legends, the new Netflix drama inspired by a remarkable true story. Many viewers are already watching the entire series in one go.

As a total cinema fan, I was completely gripped by this series. It follows Guy and Kate, played brilliantly by Tom Burke and Hayley Squires, as they’re basically thrown into the deep end. They’re everyday customs officers given hardly any training, and then sent undercover to infiltrate some seriously dangerous drug gangs in 1990s Britain, tasked with bringing them down from within. It’s a really intense watch!

Over the course of the show, the team focuses on two criminal groups: Carter’s Liverpool gang and Hakan’s Turkish gang. These rivals eventually join forces to smuggle a huge quantity of heroin into Britain.

Ultimately, does Steve Coogan’s character Don and his team succeed in stopping Carter and Hakan, and what challenges do they face during the process?

Legends ending explained: Did the team take down Carter?

In the last episode of Legends, Carter learned about Eddie’s son dying and quickly figured out Eddie had been working as an informant. Following Eddie’s orders, Bailey led an armed team to raid Carter’s warehouse, but Carter escaped and warned Hakan that Eddie had betrayed them.

Eddie was initially captured by two of Carter’s men, but he fought them off while they were in the car. He then spoke with Bailey and revealed his plan to smuggle his family out of the country, which we later confirmed he accomplished.

Guy was informed he’d be paid for the work he’d already done, but Hakan removed him from the operation after learning about Eddie. The group then focused on transporting two tonnes of heroin into Germany, with Carter responsible for bringing it into the UK from there.

After being fired, Guy reacted angrily and was officially suspended by Don, who sent him home. Guy attempted to resume a normal life, but found it difficult to adapt.

While at the zoo with his wife, Sophie, and daughter, he was seen by someone from the Turkish gang and had to act like he didn’t recognize them to maintain his cover. Later, Sophie urged him to finish the job he was working on and not return home until it was completed, to keep their family safe.

Towards the end of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership, the Home Secretary informed Blake that the Legends program was being cancelled. After Blake argued for its continuation, he was permitted to complete the existing work, but without any additional resources or staff.

Erin, Bailey, and Kate went to Germany and interfered with a deal between two criminal groups, the Turks and the Carters. This meant Guy would be brought back into the operation, with plans to transport the goods across the North Sea from Holland.

As a real crime thriller fan, I was hooked from the start! The story follows Don, Guy, Kate, and Bailey as they risk everything, sailing to the Netherlands to collect a shipment of heroin. But here’s the kicker – they’re on a seriously tight deadline, just two days, set by a dangerous Turkish gang waiting for the drugs back in the UK. The pressure was instantly turned up!

After their ship was damaged in a storm, the group was forced to escape on a life raft. While stranded, Don shared a story from his past: he’d once worked undercover within a violent football fan group, and years later, they found him and stabbed him. He cautioned that the consequences of their actions, and the people they’d encountered, would continue to affect them.

The team was rescued and successfully reached London with an armed security team in time for the exchange. However, it soon became apparent that the intention was to kill Guy and Mylonas.

It was incredible watching our team move in and take down everyone inside, including Carter, Hakan, and Aziz! Thankfully, they got there just in the nick of time. Guy had managed to record the whole deal, which gave us everything we needed to secure a conviction. I saw the pictures of the Home Secretary standing with the two tons of heroin seized – it was a huge win! The best part is, the team did all this quietly, without getting the recognition they deserved, but they knew the impact of their work, and so do I.

Where did we leave Guy, Don and the rest of the team?

So, Blake and Don, in their own ways, gave the team a well-deserved pat on the back for a job well done. Then, just like that, everyone went back to their normal lives and day jobs. It was a nice moment, but definitely a return to reality after all the excitement.

Kate, Bailey, and Erin went out for a drink to celebrate, but Guy went home to his family. Later that night, a noise outside startled him, and he cautiously peeked through his curtains, still wary and troubled by his past, just as Don had predicted.

The closing credits showed that over 12 tons of heroin were confiscated during the 1990s through this operation, worth more than £1 billion on the street.

The series finally revealed the story of the Customs workers who accomplished this remarkable feat, bringing their long-hidden efforts to light.
