Okay, let’s talk Leonardo DiCaprio. The guy is a legend, right? From the massive success of Titanic to critically adored films like The Departed, Inception, and even his role in Django Unchained, he’s consistently proven he’s one of the best. And now, I’m excited to tell you his latest action-packed thriller is hitting Prime Video on May 23rd – definitely one to add to your watchlist!
Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film, One Battle After Another, came out on September 26, 2025, and was immediately praised by critics. It received numerous awards, including 13 Academy Award nominations and wins for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), and the first-ever Best Casting award. The film also won Best Picture at both the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
One Battle After Another Is Based on a Book
Though not based directly on a book, the film One Battle After Another draws inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. Vineland is set in 1984 California and tells the stories of various characters, with glimpses into the 1960s through flashbacks. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Bob, a man struggling with memories from his past.
Bob, a former revolutionary now living a quiet life with his daughter Willa, is forced back into action when someone from his past resurfaces and Willa disappears. He must confront a dangerous old enemy and his own troubled history. One Battle After Another is an exciting mix of action, humor, and suspense, featuring a talented cast.
I was so excited to see DiCaprio in this movie, and the cast around him was amazing – Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and even newcomer Chase Infiniti! You also had veterans like Tony Goldwyn and Wood Harris, plus Alana Haim and Paul Grimstad rounding things out. And it totally paid off – One Battle After Another was a huge success, bringing in $213 million at the box office, which is great considering it cost between $130 and $175 million to make.
One Battle After Another Was Critically Acclaimed
The action thriller is highly rated by both critics and audiences. It boasts a 94% ‘Certified Fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from critics, and an 85% audience score. On IMDb, it has a rating of 7.6 out of 10, with over 400,000 reviews.
Okay, so I just read a couple of reviews for this movie, One Battle After Another, and they’re seriously hyping it up. Chase Hutchinson at the Seattle Times went as far as to say it’s the most fun, most exciting movie you’ll see all year! And Sara Michelle Fetters from MovieFreak.com described it as a really layered film – it’s got action, laughs, family drama, and it’s making some smart points about America at this moment in time. She called it a really rich, complex movie – basically, a total must-see!
The 2025 film One Battle After Another received widespread critical praise, solidifying the director’s reputation as a leading voice of his generation. You can currently watch One Battle After Another on HBO Max, and starting May 23rd, it will also be available on Prime Video, reaching an even wider audience.
