Lil Nas X is sharing an update on his well-being.
After a health scare following an encounter with police almost a year ago, the singer of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” has publicly shared that he’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Okay, so things have been… a lot. I spent a few months in rehab, and now I’m finally back home, bouncing between Atlanta with my family and LA with my friends. Honestly, I’m just trying to get my feet back on the ground and quiet the noise in my head. It’s been a journey, but I’m working on it, you know? I shared a little update on Instagram the other day because I wanted everyone to know I’m okay and focusing on getting better.
I’ve been following Lil Nas X for a while now, and I really admired his courage in finally opening up about his bipolar disorder. He shared that it was tough for him to talk about, especially explaining how it involves really high highs – what’s called mania – and then really difficult lows with depression. He explained it in a way that, according to the Mayo Clinic, accurately describes the condition, and I think it’s incredibly brave of him to use his platform to raise awareness.
He explained that receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis felt like confirming something he’d suspected for years, but he’d been avoiding facing it. He didn’t want to start medication or risk how others might perceive him.
The 27-year-old joked about facing multiple challenges, saying, “I’m already Black and gay, so if I also had bipolar disorder, that would be the hardest possible life!” He described it as living life on ‘extreme hard mode.’
As for how Lil Nas X is doing these days?
Honestly, things are really looking up for me. I’m feeling so much better, and I’m finally able to create without being held back by fear. I’m just taking the time to appreciate the simple things in life now, really savoring everything.
In fact, Lil Nas X is even working on new music following 2021’s Montero.
He shared his enthusiasm for what’s to come, calling it a new chapter, and expressed gratitude for everyone’s support. He finished by saying he loves them and wants to continue striving to make them – and himself – proud.

Last August, Lil Nas X was briefly hospitalized after a police interaction. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a call about a nude man walking on Ventura Boulevard around 5:50 a.m. on August 21st.
According to an LAPD statement, the suspect immediately attacked officers when they arrived. He was taken to a nearby hospital because of a potential drug overdose and then arrested for assaulting police.
While officials haven’t named the individual, photos and videos obtained by TMZ clearly show Lil Nas X (born Montero Lamar Hill) walking along a road wearing white cowboy boots and underwear. He seemed to pause and pose for the camera at times, often looking directly at it and pointing.

Just before the event, the Grammy-winning artist cleared his Instagram and shared new photos and videos. These included what seemed to be a sneak peek of a song he was working on with Lil Jon. He also posted a selfie showing him in a striking outfit: a beige cowboy hat, a large fur coat, a tiara, and bright red lipstick.
“OH NO sHES GONE MAD,” he captioned the since-deleted post. “CRAZY I TELL U!”
He faced four felony charges – three for injuring a police officer during a physical altercation, and one for resisting arrest. He entered a plea of not guilty to all counts.

In April 2025, Lil Nas X revealed on social media that he’d been briefly hospitalized earlier in the year due to temporary facial paralysis.
In a now-removed Instagram video from the hospital, he showed off a smile – specifically, a grin on one side of his face – and jokingly exclaimed, “This is a full smile!” He then laughed, adding with disbelief, “What the… I can’t even laugh normally. Oh my gosh.”
The next day, the artist shared an update with his followers, saying he was finally able to smile genuinely again.
He shared on Instagram that he’s been doing jaw exercises to strengthen the muscles on the right side of his face, and says it’s already feeling significantly improved.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its downsides, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffy” during interviews, she was surprised when doctors began commenting on social media, expressing concern that she might have Cushing syndrome. This led her to realize the condition could be linked to steroid injections she’d received after a breast reduction and C-section. Schumer explained that she wouldn’t have known about the syndrome without the online feedback. She recently shared that she’s relieved to have a form of Cushing syndrome that will resolve on its own and that she is healthy, calling it “the greatest news imaginable.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly started showing stroke-like symptoms.
Hailey explained in a YouTube video that Justin noticed something was wrong and asked if she was okay, but she couldn’t answer. When she tried to speak, she realized she couldn’t form words and the right side of her face began to droop. Thankfully, these symptoms eventually subsided.
After going to the hospital, tests revealed Hailey had a small blood clot in her brain, which doctors identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).
Further examination at UCLA uncovered that Hailey has a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Doctors determined the blood clot traveled through this opening and to her brain, causing the TIA.
Hailey successfully underwent a procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.
In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to eat.
Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and feeling much better, adding that they were grateful he was going to be okay. It had been a frightening and unexpected situation, but he was expected to make a full recovery.

In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he suffered a severe headache one day while in Atlanta. Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, they discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.
After surgery, twenty days passed before Jamie woke up on May 4th, finding himself in a wheelchair and unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying, “I needed every prayer.”

As a huge fan of Emilia Clarke, I was absolutely floored when I read her incredibly honest essay in The New Yorker. She detailed a terrifying health battle she went through while filming Game of Thrones, and it was truly eye-opening. It all started with a really bad headache at the gym. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.
Turns out, she’d suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She had immediate surgery, but even that wasn’t the end. She experienced aphasia during recovery, struggling to speak properly. Thankfully, that passed after a week, and she was eventually discharged from the hospital after a month.
But then, a scan in 2013 revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring another surgery. This one was even more intense – they had to open her skull. She was in excruciating pain when she woke up, and the procedure initially failed, leading to a massive bleed. Doctors were honest with her – her chances of survival were slim without yet another operation.
Despite everything, I’m so relieved to hear that she’s now fully recovered and at 100%. Her bravery in sharing her story is incredibly inspiring, and it really puts things into perspective.
