Lisa Kudrow is confident her Friends co-stars would support her through tough times, but she’s less certain about the show’s writers.
More than 20 years after the popular sitcom, which starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc, ended, Lisa Kudrow revealed that the atmosphere on set wasn’t always positive, despite the show’s cheerful title.
In an interview with The Times published on April 23rd, she revealed that there was a lot of negativity happening privately.
The actors were very close off-camera, but Lisa Kudrow said the writers weren’t as friendly, particularly when actors occasionally changed their lines during live tapings.
She remembered instances where, if a writer’s dialogue wasn’t delivered correctly, they would become extremely critical, sometimes saying things like, ‘Can’t she even read the lines properly?’ or accusing the actor of not putting in any effort and ruining their work.
However, Courteney Cox said the writers’ private conversations were even worse.
The 62-year-old claimed the men would often stay up late in their room, talking about their sexual thoughts and fantasies involving Jennifer and Courteney. He described the conversations as very intense.
Kudrow felt the writers—primarily men—were at their best, even when their behavior was harsh, when they were working late into the night trying to create the show.
She explained that she didn’t mind people talking about her when she wasn’t around, believing it ultimately didn’t affect her. Her philosophy was essentially, ‘Let them talk.’

TopMob News contacted representatives for Jennifer, Courteney, NBC, Bright Kauffman Crane Productions, and Warner Bros. Discovery for a response to Lisa’s statements, but they haven’t replied yet.
Even though Lisa didn’t have the best experiences while filming, she promised she would always speak positively about the show.
She pointed out that the show still holds up remarkably well. Many other comedies featuring famous comedians from the same era aren’t funny now, but Friends still is.
The show’s incredible cast played a big role in its success. Kudrow shared that after Matthew Perry’s passing in October 2024, she revisited the series and was amazed by everyone’s acting.
I thought my performance was decent, but Jennifer and Courteney were incredible,” Kudrow reflected. “David and Matt were hilarious, and Matthew? He completely stole the show.

Rachel freaks out about turning 30 and realizing she hasn’t achieved everything she expected by this point in her life. The episode also shows flashbacks of how the rest of the friends dealt with turning 30. It’s a bit confusing that Rachel is turning 30 in this episode – given that she was supposedly 28 back in 1996 – but it adds to the humor. (And let’s not forget she was pregnant for a whole year, so timelines were always a little flexible!)

Planning Phoebe’s wedding was incredibly stressful for Monica, made even worse by a huge blizzard hitting New York. Despite all the chaos, the wedding was gorgeous, and it was especially heartwarming for Phoebe, who often didn’t get much focus on the show. Phoebe truly deserved such a beautiful wedding to a wonderful guy like Mike, even if he did have a funny nickname!

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of funny moments, but this Friends episode is truly special! It’s the one where Joey hilariously pretends to be an older woman after a wild brain transplant storyline involving Susan Sarandon. But honestly, the real gold comes from the wedding prep. Ross, bless his heart, decides to surprise Chandler and Monica by playing the bagpipes to “Celebration” and wants them to sing along. Instead, Phoebe just becomes the bagpipes, and the resulting scene is pure comedic genius. Seriously, it’s a guaranteed tear-jerker – tears of laughter, of course! – and Lisa Kudrow’s improv is a masterclass. It’s easily one of the funniest things ever captured on film, and I still can’t watch it without cracking up.

Joey has some embarrassing dreams about Monica, while Phoebe playfully pretends to be a police officer after finding a badge. Meanwhile, Ross is determined to avoid a high delivery fee for a new couch and decides to move it himself – a plan that quickly goes hilariously wrong, leading to the iconic scene where he repeatedly yells, “PIVOT!”

Joey and Rachel started dating, and Ross began a relationship with Charlie! Meanwhile, Mike proposed to Phoebe, and Monica had a wild hair day! While the show ultimately didn’t let Joey and Rachel last, and we all secretly hoped Ross and Charlie wouldn’t either, for a little while in Barbados, it felt like our wishes were coming true.

This episode is incredibly relatable. Phoebe, Joey, and Rachel find themselves in an awkward situation trying to explain to their wealthier friends that they can’t keep up with expensive outings and gifts. This causes a rift in the group, and unfortunately, the conflict ultimately leads to Monica losing her job. It feels more grounded and realistic than most episodes of the show.

It was hard to pick a favorite, but we ultimately chose the episode revealing the story behind Rachel’s pregnancy and the memorable tale of Ken Adams.

Oh my gosh, the story of how Monica and Chandler ended up together always gets me! It’s kind of heartbreaking to think Monica initially had a crush on Joey, but thankfully it all worked out! And honestly, the episode where Rachel teaches Ben all those pranks? It’s pure gold – seriously hilarious.

Fans really enjoyed a flashback episode of Friends, but they only explored an alternate universe once. This episode imagined what would have happened if Joey had become a famous soap opera star, Rachel married Barry, Ross stayed married to Carol, Chandler became a writer, Phoebe worked in finance, and Monica hadn’t lost weight. Ultimately, everyone ended up exactly where they were supposed to be, and the episode was a sweet way of showing that Monica and Chandler were destined to be together, regardless of their careers or Monica’s weight.

This episode features a guest appearance by Brad Pitt, who at the time was married to Jennifer Aniston. He plays Will, a character who strongly dislikes Rachel and even starts a club with Ross dedicated to complaining about her. He’s understandably shocked when he learns Ross and Rachel end up dating and she later becomes pregnant with his child! And, to top it off, Joey attempts to eat a whole turkey. It’s a classic episode!

As a lifestyle observer, I always loved Phoebe and Mike’s relationship! It took a while for Phoebe to find someone truly special, but Mike Hannigan was it. You really saw their connection when she playfully decided to change her name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock – and he responded by changing his to Crap Bag! It was a hilarious moment that showed how deeply they accepted each other, even the slightly impractical choices. Beyond that, it was a really beautiful episode of growth for everyone. Rachel was on the verge of landing her dream job, Monica and Chandler were excitedly house hunting, and even Joey was starting to come to terms with them moving on. It just felt like a natural step forward for all of them, and honestly, it was heartwarming to watch.

Chandler understandably got anxious and briefly left before the wedding, but things ultimately worked out. However, Monica would be heartbroken if she found out that Rachel’s pregnancy was actually the reason everyone was talking about it instead of her wedding.

This episode is a standout because it pairs Chandler and Rachel, a combination we haven’t seen much of before! While their cheesecake-stealing isn’t exactly ethical, they’re clearly enjoying themselves, and it’s always a delight when the show throws us a surprising duo – it’s better than even a messy cheesecake situation.

Janice’s question about who’s come close to hooking up reveals some surprising history: Ross and Phoebe once kissed, Rachel and Chandler considered it, and Joey and Monica had a brief awkward moment. We also learn Central Perk used to be a bar! It’s all entertaining, but a little frustrating because nothing actually happens. A Ross and Phoebe romance could have been something special!

Chandler hilariously tried to give Joey money by inventing a silly game, while Rachel realized she needed to find a new place to live, and Monica faced the challenge of sharing her space with a new boyfriend. Phoebe, as usual, attempted to smooth things over. The show didn’t focus enough on the bond between Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe, but those moments were always special.

Ross is determined to teach his son, Ben, about Hanukkah, but Ben is all about Santa Claus. Unable to be Santa himself, Ross comes up with a creative solution: he dresses up as the Holiday Armadillo! Things get even more chaotic when Santa and Superman both show up, creating a wonderfully wacky holiday tradition. Meanwhile, Phoebe tries to annoy Joey with awful gifts, hoping to convince Rachel to move out, but Rachel surprisingly enjoys the bizarre presents and even expresses interest in living with Phoebe again. It’s a feel-good episode full of heartwarming moments.

Ross attempts to impress Emily and her friends with a tough persona, while Monica becomes obsessed with a mysterious, seemingly useless light switch. Meanwhile, Chandler struggles so much to end things with Janice that he winds up purchasing a $1,000 plane ticket to Yemen – his new address becoming 15 Yemen Road, Yemen. Although we never learned what Chandler did in Yemen, he ultimately figured out how to better communicate with women.

If you’re a fan of Ross and Rachel, you won’t want to miss this! A newly discovered video from their prom night shows Ross was prepared to take Rachel when her original date didn’t show up. It’s a sweet moment that helps them reconnect after all the drama with Julie and the list. After all, what’s more romantic than a crush that never fades?

Whether you loved or hated the Ross and Emily drama, it’s important because it set the stage for Monica and Chandler’s relationship. The build-up was crucial, making their eventual hookup in London feel natural and satisfying. The audience’s excited reaction when Monica surprises Chandler is still iconic and gives us chills.

This episode felt more like a serious drama than the show’s usual comedy. Chandler went to great lengths to convince Monica he wasn’t ready for marriage, which briefly brought her ex, Richard, back into the mix. Chandler panicked, thinking Monica was leaving him, but it turned out she had decorated their apartment with candles and was planning to propose! They ended up proposing to each other, and it was a really touching moment.

This episode is absolutely packed with drama! We find out the Gellers dislike Chandler because they mistakenly believed he was smoking marijuana in their home – it was actually Ross. Monica accidentally broke the porch swing, Ross secretly took some magazines, Phoebe has a surprising admiration for Jacques Cousteau, and Rachel made a big mistake by adding beef to the trifle. It’s a hilariously chaotic Thanksgiving!

This is the episode where everything began! Looking back, you’ll be amazed by how many iconic Friends moments are packed into it. We get a long, cozy scene of the group at Central Perk before Rachel unexpectedly arrives, completely changing their lives for the better. Get ready for the ups and downs of adulthood – it’s tough, but you’ll enjoy the ride!

This episode feels like a tightly-made mini-play, filmed as if it’s happening live. With only twenty minutes before they need to leave for a gala, Ross freaks out that no one is ready, leading to an argument with Rachel. Meanwhile, Monica obsesses over Richard, Phoebe grabs some hummus, and Joey and Chandler have a hilarious fight over a chair – culminating in Joey famously squeezing into all of Chandler’s clothes and asking, “Could I be wearing any more clothes?” Ross is, predictably, a bit of a jerk, but that’s nothing new.

Most fans remember this episode as the one with the trivia game. While Phoebe considers having a baby with her brother, the rest of the group splits into teams – the guys versus the girls – to see who knows each other better. The competition was really close until Chandler’s inability to spell cost Monica and Rachel, and ultimately, the girls lost a bet and nearly their apartment! Luckily for us, the episode gave us some funny new details about the friends, like the story behind Monica’s childhood nickname, “Miss Chanandler Bong.”

The highlight of the entire show was definitely Monica and Chandler’s secret relationship, and it all comes to a head in what’s widely considered the best episode. The episode centers around a hilarious game of secrets between Monica and Chandler versus Phoebe and Rachel (with Joey caught in the middle), trying to see who can keep quiet the longest. It’s a brilliantly paced twenty minutes, and Chandler finally saying “I love you” is the perfect finishing touch. The back-and-forth of everyone suspecting each other is just priceless – they don’t realize we know they know we know!
