Love Island USA is paying tribute to one of their own.
The show paid tribute to executive producer James Barker, who sadly passed away at age 40, during the June 16th episode. The tribute included a heartfelt photo montage showing him enjoying music and happy moments.
“For James,” a message read at the end of the episode. “We love you.”
The dance was performed with “Next to Me” by Rüfüs Du Sol playing, featuring lyrics like “When the lights come down, I wanna feel you standing next to me,” and “Ever since I first looked in your eyes / I said, ‘You’re the one.'”
Producers confirmed June 15 that Mike Barker, a story producer on Love Island USA since 2020, unexpectedly passed away while filming season eight in Fiji. He experienced a medical emergency, according to a joint statement from ITV America and Peacock.
As a huge fan of Love Island USA, I was absolutely heartbroken to hear about the passing of James. It’s not just those of us who watched the show who are devastated – the entire production team, ITV, and Peacock are grieving too. Everyone who knew and worked with James speaks about his incredible kindness, talent, and how dedicated he was. He truly left a lasting impression on all of us, and he’ll be deeply missed.

He shared on Instagram in June 2025 that he knew he wanted to be involved with Love Island as soon as he heard it was coming to the US. Six years later, he celebrated the show’s success – noting impressive viewership for @loveislandusa – and expressed his deep satisfaction with his work. He also congratulated everyone who has contributed to the show, both past and present, saying, ‘We did it!’
After Barker passed away, his partner of more than four years, Adam Roth, expressed his sadness about their relationship ending sooner than expected.
In a statement released on June 15th, Roth shared that James was “the absolute light and love of my life” and filled every aspect of his world with happiness and inspiration.
The 48-year-old shared more details about Barker’s life, explaining that he was deeply passionate about music and helped artists gain exposure by featuring their songs on Love Island USA.
He described James as a huge supporter of up-and-coming musicians, many of whom he helped showcase on Love Island. They first connected at a Billie Eilish concert, and sharing a love for live music was a big part of their relationship.
Roth expressed immense pride in the individual’s accomplishments and the supportive team around him, describing the loss as devastating.
