The original Metal Gear Solid is still a classic, but its distinctive top-down stealth gameplay feels dated compared to modern action games.
Spy Drops is an indie game currently out on Steam and Switch that doesn’t try to reinvent the genre. Instead, it deliberately recreates the experience of playing Hideo Kojima’s classic 32-bit game from 1998.
And it’s finally coming to the PS5 on 28th April, as confirmed earlier today.
Here’s the blurb, courtesy of publisher Rainy Frog:
Enjoy a fresh take on classic 3D stealth games, blending retro vibes with updated graphics, randomly created missions, current-day gear, and the option to play with friends locally.
You’re a member of the Spy Drops team, working to stop a dangerous threat that could shut down the digital world. But as you investigate, you’ll find yourself caught up in a much larger and hidden plot.
You’ve been parachuted into enemy territory with a secret mission: sneak into important buildings and carry out covert operations. While you’re there, use a device called the Dream Catcher to read the minds of soldiers and find out where to strike next.
Unlike the first Metal Gear Solid, this game doesn’t feature carefully designed levels. Instead, missions are created randomly each time you play.
And that did lead to some less than stellar reviews when this title first released.
Gaming Age wasn’t impressed, giving the game a very low score of 2.5 out of 10. They called it a poorly made copy of an older PlayStation game and suggested players would have more fun revisiting the original Metal Gear Solid instead of playing this one. That’s a harsh review!
Considering the developer has had nearly a year to work on the PS5 version, we’re hoping they’ve taken player feedback into account and made the necessary improvements.
It turns out there’s real charm here! The game’s unusual visuals and blocky characters instantly bring back a flood of fond memories.
