As a big Indiana Jones fan, I was really disappointed to hear that Disney has scrapped two TV shows that were being worked on at Lucasfilm. It seems like this happened alongside some changes in leadership at the studio, and a lot of people are questioning where the franchise is going after the latest movie didn’t do as well as expected.
Two Indiana Jones projects were quietly canceled
Lucasfilm quietly canceled two Indiana Jones TV shows before they were ever announced. One was a cartoon, nicknamed “Reggie” after the snake in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Led by Rodrigo Blaas, who directed Star Wars: Visions, this series would have shown new adventures for Indy in between the films, much like how Star Wars: The Clone Wars filled in gaps in the main Star Wars story.
Another project that was scrapped was a live-action TV series about Abner Ravenwood, Indiana Jones’ teacher and Marion Ravenwood’s father. The show, first planned in 2022, would have told the story of a character only briefly discussed in Raiders of the Lost Ark (according to The Wrap).
Although the networks didn’t publicly state why they canceled the shows, the timing strongly suggests it’s due to the poor performance of the 2023 movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The film cost around $352.3 million to make, but only earned $384 million worldwide, resulting in a significant financial loss.
The Indiana Jones franchise is now in the hands of Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, the new co-heads of Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy, the previous president, hinted in a recent interview that while the series isn’t currently being developed, it’s not over for good. She believes the films are classics and that the story of Indy could be revisited in the future, leaving the decision of whether to continue the franchise up to the new leadership.
Currently, the canceled projects indicate that Disney and Lucasfilm are being careful with the Indiana Jones franchise. They seem to be prioritizing other projects while they decide how, or even if, to continue the series in the future.
