Ludwig season 2 unveils first-look images as Line of Duty star joins David Mitchell for new episodes

After a year and a half, the first images from the second season of David Mitchell‘s popular show, Ludwig, have been released, and TopMob has an exclusive first look.

I’m so excited to see the cast returning! We’ve got Mitchell back as John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, and Anna Maxwell Martin is reprising her role as his sister-in-law, Lucy. Plus, Dipo Ola is back as DCI Russell Carter, alongside Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, and Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler. It’s going to be great to see them all again!

Karl Pilkington is coming back as DI Matt Neville, even though he hasn’t appeared in any photos released so far.

The show is also adding some new faces to the cast: Mark Bonnar (known from Line of Duty) will play newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, Sian Clifford (from Fleabag) will be local MP Joanne Kemper, Ben Ashenden (of Black Mirror) will portray DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton (from After the Flood) will play DC Caitlin Sullivan.

Season 2 begins where the first season left off. John Taylor, known as ‘Ludwig’ (played by Mitchell), is now a consultant for the Cambridge Police, helping DCI Russell Carter (Ola) solve baffling crimes that seem impossible. The season’s storyline was again developed by the show’s creator, Mark Brotherhood.

Now that he doesn’t have to pretend to be someone else, John is embracing his true self – a genius at puzzles but struggling with everyday tasks. However, his twin brother, James, remains missing. Because John now works for the police station, he’s not allowed to use police resources to find James or investigate what James was working on before he disappeared.

John is determined to find his brother James, and Lucy, James’s wife and John’s sister-in-law, is equally committed. They both know something isn’t right and are driven to uncover the truth and bring James home. While one disguise or deception has ended, another, potentially more complex one, is now unfolding.

Mitchell recently shared that his character will have a new, official position on the police team, which will bring some exciting changes to the upcoming episodes.

He explained to TopMob that the second season reveals his character’s role remains mysterious, as not all of the police department fully supports his position.

He also needs to hide the fact that he pretended to be a police officer to solve cases for a while. If anyone finds out, five murderers could go free, and he’d likely face consequences as well.

Three key actors from the first season of Ludwig won’t be back for the new season. Izuka Hoyle, who played DS Alice Finch, and Gerran Howell, who played DC Simon Evans, are both leaving the show.

Declan Howell, currently working on an American TV series called ‘The Pitt’, expressed hope that he might be able to return to the show in the future, saying he ‘really loves’ being a part of it.

Sophie Willan, who played Holly Pinder, also won’t be returning, as her character died at the end of the first season.

You can watch the second season of Ludwig later this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The first season is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
