The popular detective John Luther, previously known from the TV series, is returning in a new movie coming to Netflix.
Luther, the popular TV show starring Idris Elba, aired on the BBC for five seasons between 2010 and 2019. In 2023, a movie continuing the story, titled ‘The Fallen Sun,’ was released on Netflix and in some theaters. While the movie made a few minor changes to what happened before, it was essentially a continuation of the series.
I’m so excited for the new John Luther series! After everything that happened – him escaping prison and getting recruited by MI5 – I thought we’d seen the last of him. But he’s back with a brand new case, and it looks like some characters we already know and love will be helping him out this time around. It’s going to be amazing!
Fans of Luther will be especially excited to see Ruth Wilson return as Alice Morgan, the complex and captivating character who often challenged and intrigued DCI Luther.
At the end of the fifth season, Alice seemingly fell to her death, but she’s now returned. Is she somehow still alive, or is something even more dangerous unfolding for John Luther?
Dermot Crowley is returning as Martin Schenk, a former ally of Luther, in the new series. He last appeared in The Fallen Sun.

Cynthia Erivo, an Academy Award nominee and known for her role in Wicked, previously played Odette Raine, the leader of the Serious and Serial Crime Unit, in the last film. However, she won’t be appearing in this one.
Neil Cross, who created the series, is writing the script for the new film, and Jamie Payne – who previously directed The Fallen Sun – is directing. Both are returning collaborators on the project.
Cross shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the characters Luther, Alice, and Schenk feel like family to them.
I’m really excited for this new film! It follows Luther as he investigates a string of really disturbing murders that don’t seem to connect at all. But, on top of that, everyone is trying to kill him, so he’s fighting for his life while trying to solve the case. It’s going to be intense!
We previously interviewed Cross for our video series, The TopMob Writers’ Room, where we discuss the creative process with screenwriters. During that conversation, he talked about the possibility of a return for the character Luther.
When asked about a possible return, Cross strongly suggested we could see the character again. He joked that he couldn’t be any more explicit without risking trouble, but confirmed there’s a good chance of another appearance.
Cross also previously hinted at a return for Alice Morgan too.
We think we’ve heard this song before.
Filming for the next Luther installment is scheduled to start in February 2026, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
