The popular TV show Luther, which ran for five seasons over nine years, finished its original run in 2019. However, the story continued in 2023 with a new movie on Netflix called The Fallen Sun.
Despite ending on television in 2022 and preparing for a movie next year, Peaky Blinders will actually return for two more seasons. This raises the question: has the creator changed his plans, and could the same happen with Luther?
We interviewed Cross for our video series, *The TopMob Writers’ Room*, where we explore the minds of screenwriters. He mentioned he’s continuing with his original idea.
When asked if Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy now exists only through movies, he replied, “I believe so. If he were to return, film would be the most fitting medium for him.”
He continued by explaining that Luther has evolved beyond just being a character; it’s become a fully realized world. After a long run, that world feels substantial enough to support stories told on both film and television.
“So I wouldn’t be at all averse to something in the same universe, as it were, happening on telly.”

Several characters could potentially lead their own stories in the future. These include Martin Schenk, played by Dermot Crowley, Mark North played by Paul McGann, and Odette Raine, Cynthia Erivo’s character from ‘The Fallen Sun’, as they are all still active in the universe.
Ruth Wilson’s character, Alice Morgan, is the most likely to reappear in the series. Although it seemed she died at the end of season five, both Wilson and the show’s creator have hinted that her death wasn’t actually shown on screen, leaving the door open for a potential return.
We’ll probably see another Luther movie starring Idris Elba before that happens.
During a discussion for *The TopMob Writers’ Room*, Cross strongly suggested Luther could return in future installments. He joked that he couldn’t say more without risking trouble from Netflix, but confirmed there’s a good chance viewers will see the character again.
The writer also discussed his work on popular shows like Spooks, Hard Sun, and Doctor Who, as well as his latest Sky thriller, The Iris Affair, featuring Niamh Algar and Tom Hollander.
The full interview with Neil Cross from The TopMob Writers’ Room will be released on October 16th.
The Iris Affair premieres on Sky and NOW on Thursday, October 16th. Interested in watching? You can find information on how to subscribe to Sky TV.
