The 1980s saw many toys adapted into popular cartoons, and M.A.S.K., which premiered in 1985, was a prime example. Based on a successful toy line, the show followed the M.A.S.K. team as they fought the villainous V.E.N.OM. using their high-tech transforming vehicles. Recently, a new series was announced, and excitingly, this opens the door for potential crossovers with other classic franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe.
The classic series M.A.S.K. is returning with a new comic book from Skybound and Image Comics! The creative team includes writer Dan Watters (known for Batman: Dark Patterns), artist Pye Parr (New Gods), colorist Pierluigi Casolino (DC vs Vampires), and letterer Rus Wooton (Transformers). Excitingly, this new M.A.S.K. series will be part of the Energon Universe, connecting it to the worlds of Skybound’s popular Transformers and G.I. Joe comics. These franchises have been linked from the start, and now M.A.S.K. joins them as the third major series in this shared universe.

Everything We Know About M.A.S.K. Joining the Energon Universe

The upcoming M.A.S.K. series centers on Matt Trakker and his team of experts as they battle V.E.N.O.M.’s dangerous plans. M.A.S.K. uses advanced technology to transform their vehicles and themselves, giving them the power to fight back.
Despite his disadvantages, Miles Mayhem consistently remains ahead of the game, seeking powerful weapons both on and off Earth with the goal of total domination or betraying humanity by selling the planet to the highest bidder. M.A.S.K. is the only force standing in his way, but internal conflicts stemming from Trakker’s past could jeopardize their efforts.
According to writer Dan Watters, deception can be incredibly powerful, but sometimes, force is the most effective solution. His new book, M.A.S.K., is about everyday people stepping up to fight against the powerful technology of the Energon Universe, and it’s packed with action and excitement. Watters is thrilled to share this story with artist Pye this summer, inviting readers to join the M.A.S.K. network and help Matt Trakker save the world.

Pye Parr is thrilled to be working on M.A.S.K., saying it’s full of everything he loved as a kid – sports cars, jets, lasers, and robots! He even admitted to yelling with excitement when offered the job, and jokingly lamented selling his old toys. He feels recreating those toys as art is worth it, and he’s excited to see where writer Dan Abnett takes the story in the Energon Universe.
Skybound and Image Comics have been developing a M.A.S.K. series for a while now. This will be the first time the shared universe of Energon has included a property beyond its original launch titles.
Robert Kirkman enthusiastically declared his love for M.A.S.K., predicting readers will be amazed by the book. He praised Dan and Pye for creatively expanding the Energon Universe.

Ben Abernathy, our Executive Editor, shared, ‘We’ve been secretly developing M.A.S.K. for a while now, and I’m excited to finally show everyone what we’ve created!’ He added that Dan, Pye, Pierluigi, and Rus are bringing a really exciting new story to the Energon Universe.
Okay, so the first issue of the new M.A.S.K. comic is going all-out with the covers! We’re talking a ton of artists lending their talents – J. Scott Campbell, Cedric Poulat, and a whole bunch more. And it’s not just about the names, either. They’re doing foil covers, some really cool die-cut foil mask covers, and even surprise variants you get randomly – kind of like collectible blind bags. If you’re a cover collector, this one’s definitely going to grab your attention!

Readers will get a first glimpse of M.A.S.K. in the Energon Universe Special 2026, available on Free Comic Book Day, May 2, 2026. This special issue will feature four new stories starring characters from Transformers, G.I. Joe, Void Rivals, and M.A.S.K.. The first issue of the ongoing M.A.S.K. comic series will arrive in comic shops on June 3, 2026.
