Marvel fans can now watch The Punisher: One Last Kill on Disney+, and it’s one of the most intense and violent portrayals of the Punisher yet. This special presentation has a straightforward story: Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) is struggling with his mental health while hiding in a rough part of New York City. When a powerful crime boss finds out where Frank is staying, he sends every hitman he knows after him. Frank’s apartment building quickly becomes a chaotic battleground as he fights just to make it through the day.
It’s clear that The Punisher: One Last Kill focuses heavily on action, throwing numerous villains at Frank Castle for him to defeat. However, the story’s main crime boss adds an important layer of backstory from the wider Marvel Universe. While not essential to understand the plot, knowing this history makes the story more meaningful.
Marvel’s Ma Gnucci & Her Crime Family, Explained

Isabella “Ma” Gnucci was the head of the Gnucci Crime Family, a Mafia group that controlled New York City’s criminal activity for a period. The Gnucci family first appeared in a 2000 Punisher story arc called “Welcome Back Frank,” created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. This story served as a fresh start for the Punisher comic series, following a period where Marvel had taken the character in some outlandish directions – including making him an undead, magically-powered, demon hunter. Ennis brought Frank Castle back to life and refocused his mission on his classic role: tracking down and permanently eliminating criminals the legal system fails to stop.
In the “Welcome Back Frank” storyline, the Punisher announced his return to New York City’s criminal underworld by targeting the Gnucci family, who had flourished in his absence. He killed Ma Gnucci’s three sons, prompting Ma and her brother, Dino, to seek revenge. Despite numerous attempts on his life – including one at the zoo where Ma herself confronted him – the Punisher always prevailed. He ultimately confronted Ma Gnucci, setting her house ablaze and tragically killing her within the flames. Prior to this, Ma had offered a $10 million bounty for the Punisher’s capture, attracting dangerous and unstable killers, notably a massive and ruthless Russian mercenary. The Punisher fought through all these threats, ultimately leading to the final, devastating confrontation with Ma Gnucci.
The Punisher story arc “Welcome Back Frank” is widely considered a classic and continues to inspire both the comics and adaptations that followed. The 2004 Punisher movie with Thomas Jane, for example, heavily drew from it, including Frank Castle’s comical life among quirky neighbors like Joan, Spacker Dave, and Bumpo. The film also recreated the famous, violent fight on Frank’s doorstep with the Russian (played by wrestler Kevin Nash). Even now, over 25 years later, the story’s impact is still felt, as evidenced by the recent introduction of the Gnucci Crime Family and its history into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in One Last Kill.
How the MCU Gnucci Family Is Different From the Comics
“The Punisher: One Last Kill” retells a familiar story, similar to “Welcome Back Frank,” but adapts it to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a standalone special. The plot centers around Ma Gnucci (Judith Light) placing a bounty on the Punisher, this time to avenge her husband, Benny, and her three sons: Bobby, Eddie Jr., and Carlo. This version changes things slightly; Benny Gnucci replaces Ma’s brother from the original story, but plays a less important role.
Beware, spoilers ahead! The Punisher special concludes with a brutal fight as Frank escapes a trap set by Ma Gnucci. Interestingly, she survives, suggesting this version of the “Welcome Back Frank” storyline might not be finished. This opens the door for some of her more extreme actions – including the introduction of The Russian – to be explored in future Marvel content. The special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, was particularly good because it gave Frank Castle a compelling villain to face – someone he didn’t simply overpower with brute force.
