Major Anime Studio Returns With a New Release After AI Controversy

The fourth season of the popular fantasy anime Ascendance of a Bookworm premiered in Spring 2026. While Ajia-do studio animated the first three seasons, WIT Studio, famous for shows like the initial seasons of Attack on Titan, took over for Season 4. WIT Studio is well-known for its high-quality animation, having also created visually impressive series such as Moonrise, Love Through a Prism, and Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song. However, fans quickly expressed disappointment, claiming that the opening sequence of the new season appeared to be created using generative AI. The season debuted on April 4th, 2026, and just days later, the studio addressed these concerns publicly.

The studio discovered that AI-generated art was used in some of the background visuals and quickly replaced the opening theme with a new version featuring redrawn artwork. They stated that they do not allow the use of AI in their projects and have taken responsibility for the issue, though fans remain upset. Despite the controversy, the studio released the Agents of the Four Seasons anime this Spring 2026. Before the fourth season of Ascendance of a Bookworm aired, WIT Studio also unveiled a new music video by Orangestar, who created the opening theme song.

Orangestar created the opening theme song, “Petals,” for a new anime, and then released the complete song as a video. Anime theme songs typically last 90 seconds, with the full version becoming available afterward. The music video was animated by WIT Studio and maintains their signature beautiful style. You can listen to the song on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.

What Is Agents of the Four Seasons About?

This anime is adapted from a light novel by Kana Akatsuki, who also created the popular series Violet Evergarden. The story takes place in a world that was once perpetually winter. Because it was a desolate existence, Spring was created to bring companionship. Eventually, the world desired even more variety, leading to the birth of Summer and Autumn. Those responsible for maintaining the seasons are known as the Agents of the Four Seasons.

Ten years ago, Hinagiku, known as the Agent of Spring, vanished, and spring disappeared with her. Now, after overcoming incredible challenges, she’s returned to bring the season back. The story also includes a legend about her connection with Winter. The light novel series finished in 2021, and the anime adaptation, with 14 episodes, is currently streaming new episodes on Crunchyroll every Saturday at 9:30 A.M. Pacific Time.
