Elliot Stabler is off duty.
Law & Order: Organized Crime has been canceled after five seasons, TopMob News confirmed April 16.
Christopher Meloni’s Law & Order spin-off, featuring his role as Detective Stabler, aired on NBC for four seasons, from 2021 to 2024. It then moved to the streaming service Peacock for its fifth season last year.
The crime drama, created by Dick Wolf, centers on Elliot Stabler as he rejoins the New York City Organized Crime Control Bureau after a ten-year hiatus from the police.
Of course, Meloni is no stranger to saying goodbye to crime-fighting in the Law & Order universe.
For over ten years, Meloni acted alongside Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He left the show in 2011, but returned a decade later for Organized Crime, and has made occasional appearances on SVU since.
Okay, so everyone—everyone—has been hoping Olivia and Elliot would finally get together, right? And honestly, I was losing hope! But Mariska Hargitay just hinted that she wouldn’t be completely against it! Like, she’s not saying it’s definitely happening, but she’s not shutting down the idea of a happily ever after for them either! I’m seriously losing it right now!
In November, the 65-year-old told People magazine that he believes both characters, Benson and Stabler, should retire. He said, ‘I think both characters, Stabler and Benson, should ride off into the sunset.’
Meloni admitted that their complex past, both professionally and personally, makes a simple, happy ending unlikely.

Okay, look, the thought of Benson and Stabler finally getting together? It’s… complicated, honestly! So hard to imagine, but also… the chemistry! It’s not just about a ‘romantic relationship,’ it’s that their connection is already so intense and… well, let’s just say there’s something seriously sexy about their friendship. It’s a delicate balance, you know?
He explained that they have a deep understanding of each other, even without saying much. He believes this comes from the long history of their friendship, and that they’ve repeatedly tried to change the nature of their relationship.
Even though the future of the characters Benson and Stabler together is uncertain now that Organized Crime has been cancelled, the real-life friendship between actresses Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni is still very strong.
He described the feeling of reuniting as special, explaining it’s like remembering who they used to be and acknowledging how they’ve changed. He said no one else could truly understand their shared history and connection.
