I’ve been following one of the longest-running sci-fi shows, “Doctor Who,” since its debut on the small screen in 1963. Co-created by Sydney Newman, C.E. Webber, and Donal Wilson, this science fiction drama spanned over 26 seasons before wrapping up in 1989. However, it was rebooted in 2005 under the guidance of showrunner Russell T. Davies, attracting a new generation to the captivating story of a time-traveling Doctor and their TARDIS. Under Davies and later Steven Moffat, “Doctor Who” soared in popularity, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Recently, one of the writers, Mark Gatiss, suggested that it might be best for the TARDIS to take a break, as the show’s popularity seems to be waning.
Over time, “Doctor Who” had a significant influence on pop culture, but after Moffat’s departure in 2017, it seems to have experienced some setbacks. A portion of this could be due to audience resistance towards introducing a female Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker stepping into the role that year. Unfortunately, her portrayal was met with considerable online criticism, and the same fate befell Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. With whispers of cancellation and uncertainty surrounding Gatwa’s departure, writer Mark Gatiss suggests that the show might benefit from a break.
He said to the Prospect, “It’s been around for twenty years now, which is a remarkably long period. In fact, it’s almost as long as its initial run. To put it simply, that’s quite impressive. Perhaps it’s due for a break again. Frankly, I’m not sure. All I can say is that my affection for the show remains unchanged.
For several months now, there have been whispers about the potential cancellation of the popular British TV show, Doctor Who, due to poor ratings and a supposed breakdown in the deal between Disney and the BBC. Despite a significant drop in viewership over the past few years, the exact status of the series remains uncertain. In a surprising move, the BBC has announced plans for an animated spinoff, and another spinoff titled The War Between the Land and the Sea is set to debut later this year. This could indicate that the show still enjoys enough popularity to warrant its continuation, but the question remains: should it?
Following two full decades, “Doctor Who” has introduced numerous Doctors and companions, many of whom have risen to prominence in Hollywood. However, it’s worth noting that the show has had its ups and downs in terms of quality. The extended break helped reignite fan enthusiasm for the series, making them eager to embark on new adventures with the Doctor and the TARDIS once more. As such, Gatiss may have a point in proposing a brief hiatus for the show.
For people living in the UK and Ireland, you can stream “Doctor Who” on BBC iPlayer. If you’re a fan residing outside of these countries, “Doctor Who” is currently streaming on Disney+. Additionally, the spinoff titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” will be available to stream once it officially premieres on Disney+ as well.
