The concept art for “Captain America: Brave New World” offers a striking new appearance for one of the latest villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not every piece of concept art produced by Marvel Studios ends up on-screen, as some thrilling scenes and characters from these drafts never make it into the Marvel Universe. For instance, the Avengers’ fight against Mega-Ultron, the Scarlet Witch’s killing spree, Hawkeye wearing a superhero suit years before his Disney+ series debut, and an earthbound, gritty version of the Guardians of the Galaxy have all been left out.
Artist Michael Uwandi, who’s worked on productions such as Moon Knight, Predator: Killer of Killers, Westworld, among others, recently unveiled a unique design for Seth Voelker’s Sidewinder in the upcoming 2025 film Captain America: Brave New World. The concept art suggests that Sidewinder and his Serpent Society comrades might have donned masks resembling snake skin made of nanotechnology to conceal their identities. Uwandi refers to this as an initial phase of transformation for the Serpent Society, suggesting further physical changes following their first clash with Sam Wilson’s Captain America (Anthony Mackie).
Why Wasn’t This Concept Art Used in Captain America: Brave New World?
During the making of “Captain America: Brave New World”, the Serpent Society underwent significant alterations. Originally, this villainous group, based on a team from Marvel Comics that debuted in 1985’s “Captain America #310”, was intended to feature characters with snake themes, portrayed by Seth Rollins and Rosa Salazar. However, these characters were eventually removed, giving way for Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson’s Copperhead and Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder. Unlike their comic book counterparts and earlier MCU concept art, these new versions of the Serpent Society did not possess any snake-themed enhancements, marking a departure from their original designs.
Before the actor, Timothy Olyphant (known for shows like ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘The Mandalorian’, and ‘The Boys’) was chosen to play Sidewinder, Uwandi created this concept art. This is why the artwork doesn’t resemble Olyphant, and it seems his casting may have influenced Marvel Studios to alter their plans, as fans likely expected to see Olyphant’s likeness. However, it would have been great if the Serpent Society in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ had been truer to their comic book appearances and abilities, rather than being portrayed merely as mercenaries. Future MCU projects could potentially rectify the mistakes made in this regard.
In advance of the scheduled release of “Captain America: Brave New World” in February 2025, Giancarlo Esposito hinted at Sidewinder’s potential comeback in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, although it hasn’t been confirmed that he will reprise the role. There are several possibilities where Sidewinder and the Serpent Society could make their return. If this occurs post-“Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is expected to reset the MCU, Marvel would have an ideal chance to introduce a more authentic version of the team as portrayed in the comics. This revamped team, with enhanced powers, could pose an even greater challenge for Captain America.
