For many years, Toonami has been a go-to destination on cable TV for both classic and modern anime series. Now part of Adult Swim’s programming block, it continues to thrive with popular shows like “Dragon Ball Daima,” “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War,” “Dandadan,” and “One Piece” still attracting large audiences on Toonami. In the coming weeks, another well-known shonen franchise will join Cartoon Network’s lineup. The addition of this new show underscores the fact that cable television still has a place for anime amidst the ongoing streaming wars, demonstrating Toonami’s enduring appeal and relevance.
Starting August 23rd, Cartoon Network will start broadcasting “Blue Exorcist – Shimane Illuminati Saga”, as announced by Toonami. This new season, airing at 1:30 AM Eastern, is a much-anticipated comeback for the series since the end of its second season in 2017. The “Shimane Illuminati Saga” was introduced last year, following which another season of “Blue Exorcist” has been released to expand the storyline of Rin Okumura and his extraordinary exploits. Previously, “Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga” served as the fourth season, airing towards the end of last year before concluding in March this year. As the manga continues under creator Kazue Kato, there’s potential for Studio VOLN to adapt more material and continue with the anime series.

What is The Shimane Illuminati Saga?
The narrative unfolds in two realms – Assiah, where humans reside, and Gehenna, home to demons. Typically, these dimensions don’t overlap, but recently, demons have started meddling with the human world. However, there are exceptional individuals within the human race who can drive out such demons – they are known as Exorcists.
The narrative progresses, “Rin along with his companions vanquished Impure King in Kyoto and resumed their routine at True Cross Academy. Yet, the Knights of the True Cross found themselves overwhelmed with more consultations about demons as an unusual series of occurrences swept across the globe. Simultaneously, Rin and other Exwires are occupied in unraveling the school’s peculiar predicament. During this time, the True Cross Academy Festival is at its peak, but unexpectedly, Lucifer, the Lord of Light and Chief Commander of Illuminati, makes a sudden appearance.
Toonami’s Future
This significant purchase by Toonami offers reassurance to those concerned about its future, as it suggests a continued presence for the popular programming block. Historically, Toonami has faced intense competition in the streaming world, a battle that co-creator Jason DeMarco has acknowledged. Securing shows like “Blue Exorcist” and “Dandadan” was no small task, but Toonami appears to have triumphed thrice over with this move. Here’s hoping that this success indicates a promising future for the platform.
