Malcolm in the Middle’s Erik Per Sullivan Makes Rare Appearance

Erik Per Sullivan’s future is now.

Almost all of Erik’s former co-stars from Malcolm in the Middle are participating in the show’s revival, Life’s Still Unfair, which starts April 10th. However, Erik continues to prefer a private life, and recently made a rare public appearance in Boston.

On April 3rd, 34-year-old Erik, a Harvard graduate student, was spotted doing some grocery shopping. He dressed casually in jeans and a navy sweater, looking at his phone with one hand while carrying his bags with the other.

Erik stopped acting when he was fourteen and has lived a private life ever since. He was last seen in public almost a year ago, in March 2025, during a relaxed outing in Boston.

Although Erik hasn’t rejoined Bryan Cranston (Hal), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Justin Berfield (Reese), or Christopher Masterson (Francis) for the show’s revival, he’s just as supportive of his former co-stars as they are of him.

Last June, on the Fly on the Wall podcast, Bryan shared a conversation he had with Erik. Bryan told Erik they had renewed the show, and Erik initially responded with excitement. However, he quickly changed his tune, saying he didn’t want to participate, despite acknowledging the good news.

He mentioned he hadn’t acted in years – not since he was around nine years old – and wasn’t interested in revisiting it, especially when talking about his former TV son.

Jane, who plays Dewey’s mother on screen, recently revealed more about what Erik is like when he’s not filming.

She told The Guardian in an article published on April 3rd that he is studying Charles Dickens and is a remarkably gifted student.

And she admitted producers tried to tempt him to return.

“They offered him buckets of money to come back,” she noted, “and he just said: ‘No thank you.’”

Dewey is back, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark now playing the character after Erik. This means the new series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, is shaping up to be a great continuation of the story.

Just take it from Malcolm himself.

Frankie shared with TopMob News in February 2025 that fans will be really happy to see the new characters and storylines. He was particularly excited about the potential for Malcolm and his family, saying, ‘The possibilities are endless!’ Having read the scripts, he’s confident viewers will be very pleased with what’s in store.
